You guys might want to snag this before it gets pulled... What seems like a simple Flashlight app, is actually a Tethering app!

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/20/...store-for-now/

I haven't tested it on the iPad, but it should (theoretically) allow tethering without jailbreaking. It's $0.99, and it will probably be pulled any minute.

^^

Hopefully one of you guys with an iPad can test this out. There's a proxy section in the WiFi setup for the iPhone, I assume there's one for the iPad too.

(Substitute "iPad" for "computer" in these instructions.)

Quote:
# Set up an ad hoc Wi-Fi network on your computer (network name and password requirement are not important).
# Connect to the Wi-Fi network you just created on your iPhone through the Settings/Wi-Fi menu.
# Tap on the blue arrow to the right of the selected Wi-Fi network, click Static in the IP Address menu and enter the following IP address and chuckle at its geek quotient: 13.37.13.37
# Next, enter 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet Mask field.
# Back out of the Settings menu to ensure these settings are saved (though hitting the Home button right away shouldn’t change them).
# Go to your Mac or PC and change the network settings to use the SOCKS Proxy and enter 13.37.13.37 as the Socks Proxy Server address and 1337 as the port.
# Be sure to apply/save these settings.
# Go back to your iPhone and open the Handy Light app and tap the flashlight colors at the bottom in the following sequence: blue, yellow, red. Then tap the top right corner of the screen and the color should change to purple. Your iPhone is now capable of sharing its internet connection with the computer you set up.
# Leave the app open and go to your computer and start browsing. As the video describes, we found that it took a few seconds for the connection to kick in but then it worked like a charm. Though many variables affect network speed tests, a quick test using Speedtest.net yielded 3.92 Mb/s down and 0.38 Mb/s up while tethered to our iPhone 4 through Handy Light.
Edit: Snag #1... Doesn't look like it's possible to create a new network on an iPad/iPhone.

It's in "Settings" "General" "Autolock" I'm using iOS 4.0.1 not jailbroken. That option has been there since the day I got the 3GS. it came with iOS 3.0 I believe.

Nope. I got my 3G the week they were released and I turned off auto-locking immediately cause it annoyed me.

Did a quick google search: apparently, as of 3.0, Exchange can do this:

Too weird...

My buddy, who isn't the most tech savvy asked me how I turned the auto lock off so it wouldn't pop up after a certain time (mine is 3 minutes). His ipod touch doesn't have it... he goes to that menu and it doesn't give him any options but to leave the auto lock on.

Flashlight app with tethering has been pulled. Was the #2 paid app in the app store when they pulled it. Dude will make a nice piece of change.

Is anybody else able to get this to work? I'm just wondering if I'm holding my iPhone wrong or something.

I can get it to download onto my PC fine; and I'm sure if I fight with iTunes long enough I can force it down my iPhone's throat.

Your PC? You may not be downloading the proper file. Try this:

Download Schedule for MAC ical.

Yep, that's the one I'm trying to download on my iPhone. It dowloads fine on my PC; I con't open it with anything other than Notepad; but it downloads.

Sounds like the "Never" auto-lock option might disappear if you set up your phone to sync with an Exchange account - check here and here for discussion on how to get it back (need to change settings on the Exchange server).

Skype has finally been updated with multitask support. Receive (Skype) calls in the background, or send it to the background to do something else while on a (Skype) call.

Also, it looks like they are nixing the plan to charge for calls over 3G.

I tested it out and it works great over wifi and 3g. Switching to other apps does not affect the call at all. Plus the one thing that really bugged me about the skype app is now fixed. The sleep button no longer puts the call on hold. It just turns off the screen to save power and the call continues.

Default Free Preview of Bell Live Mobile TV (iPhone)

So I happened to call into Bell to inquire about their Mobile TV feature; and apparently starting tomorrow through September 30th they are running a free preview of the app for iPhone users.

Now of course this does use up your data; so if you are like me and only have 500 MB you will need to watch your usage pretty close.

Link to what it offers:
http://www.bell.ca/shopping/PrsShpWls_TVServices.page

You will also need the app- I found it in the store pretty quick by typing "Bell" into the search.

Vonage came out with a pretty neat app:
http://skunkpost.com/news.sp?newsId=2937

Similar idea to Skype except it works off facebook contacts (which is good for me since I have a lot more facebook contacts than Skype contacts). And it runs in the background so you can receive calls when your phone is locked. Just tried it with a friend and it worked well.
