not that I disagree with the fact he's been a dealt a tough hand, but dragging this out didn't help at all. At some point you bite the bullet and make the deal ... deals won't get better with time here. It's more than reasonable to think that offers are already quite a bit worse than they were months ago. If you're about maximizing assets, and that's what a GM should be concerned about, he hasn't handled this well at all.
I guess we’ll never know what offers he received, when he gave clearance to medical records, and when he let other GMs know about his budget allowances. It certainly seems to have dragged on but I can’t say it’s been a colossal disaster considering he’s needed to do this since maybe July? To some degree I blame Eichel for not filing a grievance to get the NHL to opine.
It would be much easier to get this trade done if we didn't sign Zadorov
It is a head-scratcher. You would think if you’re targeting a $10 mil player in a trade, you might leave yourself a bit of cap wiggle-room. Instead of dropping $3.75 mil on a depth d-man.

Why are GM's not allowed to talk about interest in players on other teams? Why is it considered tampering? Essentially why is tampering bad? Wouldn't it create more excitement? Thank you.

Seems like they could use him anyway, they have a ton of cap space, his deal is expiring and they essentially have 2 AHLers/waiver fodder players playing on their blueline in Wolanin and Bryson at the moment with Jokiharju injured.

But the Sabres have no interest in getting better this season. They’re tanking. Again.

How would you feel if the Oilers GM were actively recruiting Gaudreau, right now, to come play with McDavid next year?
It'd be a huge distraction for everyone involved, it undercuts and negotiating power Calgary has on Gaudreau's extension or trade value, etc.

Pending UFA Zadorov should not be a roadblock for a cap floor team in Buffalo. Even though he already failed there they don’t need to keep him past the deadline. He can get dealt for a late pick

Cap space has value, even for a team with lots of it. Why wouldn’t the Sabres extract assets from the Flames in exchange for eating cap, the way the Coyotes have?

Exactly. Teams could make up trade attempts to cause dissent/disruption within an organization. Treliving could just say that the oilers are actively shopping McDavid to other teams even if the oilers deny it. Suddenly McDavid feels unappreciated and wants out.

Because they need to close this effing deal. “Sorry Brad we have everything we need from you to move forward but we can’t take the 3.75M pending UFA Dman so we are just going to wait it out”
Makes no sense. I get not wanting to take long term cap back or retain for 5 seasons but taking a sub $4M pending UFA when they need cap to be compliant doesn’t seem like a stretch.
I can’t even think of a scenario where Buffalo would be in a position this year where they needed $4M in cap space.
