Bennett still had a pretty good game. As stated already, he played on the PP, drew several penalties, created several chances, made some big hits and killed penalties. Good to see him doing well.
Florida is going to be fun to watch in the playoffs, but damn, that Central division is tough.

You would have fluked out but that just seems like someone being a contrarian. There was a top four and then a grand canyon to 5 based on rankings. Every team would have taken Bennett at 4 at the latest.

Maybe. I have been and probably always will be after the best RHS forward available. Reinhart went at 2. Nylander was next best in my books.

Fluke would have been saying I was after Pastrnak.

Sam was out there on the 5-on-3 with Huberdeau and Barkov when they scored the 3-2 goal. Screened the goalie, so helped with the goal even though he didn't register a point or a plus. Florida PP was garbage though, going 1 for 9.

He also drew three minor penalties while taking one himself.

I feel like I could sense his nerves a little bit being out in crunch time like that. It’s been a long time since he’s been one of “the guys”. He held up well, but it will be interesting to see if he can maintain full confidence (in himself, and with Q)

I hope Bennett goes on to score 20 points in the playoffs and wins the cup with Florida. I've always had a soft spot for him. Hope he becomes a beast of a player with his change of scenery. It was never going to happen in Calgary and we got a more than fair return for him.

Go Sam Go!

I haven't been following this thread, but where the #### is the Sam Bennett hating New Lanny Era or whatever his name is? He should be prepping his pube sandwich size large with a side of pubes and a glass of milk to wash it all down.

Don't really get this post.

I 100% agree on "It doesn't really matter if he does good in Florida or not" - I feel the same way. I wish him the best, but how he does in Florida will not impact Calgary in one way or another at all, except twice a year when the teams play head-to-head in the future. It will have zero bearing on the success of the Flames in the future. 100% agree.

But who is saying this is a guy you rebuild around? Why the extremes? It isn't just "Bust" or "Franchise Player". There is a LOT of room in-between those goalposts.

I myself will cheer him on other than the 2 head-to-head games against Calgary (whenever that is again!). However, if you listen to him in some interviews, and how other people talk about him, everyone really likes this kid. He is actually quite easy to cheer for. He has nothing but good things to say about the Calgary Flames franchise, nothing but good things to say about the city, and nothing but good things to say about the fans.

I get that he moved on so 'who cares'. Some people won't want to cheer on anyone that doesn't play for the Flames any longer. That's fine. I just think that the extremes (on both sides) is just kind of odd. It isn't just "bust" or "franchise player".

Maybe Sam Bennett is riding a new team bump and will revert back to the same player he always was for the Flames? Maybe he will hit the potential he had when he was drafted and hit 18 goals and 36 pts as a rookie. He was showing a lot better under Sutter putting up points and playing PK and PP under Sutter. Top 6 vs bottom 6 it doesn’t matter he was looking better under Sutter.

I am happy with the return and that they traded him but I am not surprised he is thriving with a fresh start and feels that he can now hit his potential.
Sorry if I sounded like I was saying you felt entitled to move up. Didn't mean it that way and I didn't explain that properly. I know exactly how you feel when you get passed up for a better opportunity. Been there myself. My example was that about Bennett where he needs to show that he's can play with the best. Hopefully he'll continue his journey to become more successful than he has with the Flames. And yes, I'm definitely happy with the 2nd round return, especially when there wasn't even hope that the Flames could get anything for him and the worse is if he gets picked up on the expansion draft or he walks to another team for nothing.

I hope he doesn't look back at the Flames in a poor light. Hopefully it was just coaching issues but not with the organization itself.

Another assist today for Bennett, but 3rd on the team in CF% at 83.3% in 13:39 22:17 of ice-time. 4:50 PP time; 3:46 on the PK. 3 shots on goal. On the ice for 12 scoring chances for, 2 chances against. No goals scored while he was on the ice.

Bad night for Sam in the faceoff dot, only winning 3 and losing 10 draws.

Panthers were behind most of the game, but managed to tie it early in the 3rd and win in OT, 4-3.

Just whipped through a very entertaining Panthers-Hurricanes game; Bennett looked pretty darn great again IMO.

Assist on first goal, just a good stick.

Lots of zone entries, good sticks in the D-zone, and some nice passes setting up scoring chances. A few big hits, and created some scoring chances out of nothing (a tough angle backhand on the rush generated a juicy rebound). Lots of loose pucks in front of the net, it seemed like Sam was always in the neighbourhood.

He made an unremarkable play on the 2nd goal; skated the puck out of the zone and dumped in at the red line then went off for a change…the goal came about 7 seconds later…could’ve been a 3rd or 4th assist with a +.

Bennett always on PP1 and PK1. He and Barkov nearly scored SH in the 3rd…then the next unit did score SH. Then Bennett had a partial breakaway and hit the post on the same PK!

911 line was buzzing down the stretch (TIL nickname).

Q pulled the goalie in the final seconds of a tie game trying to get a regulation win to win the division Aho mugged Barkov on the ice for like 10 seconds with no call. Beauty no-look goal by Barkov early in OT.

No glaring mistakes by Sam; weak on the faceoff dot, but he helped turn at least 1 FO 'loss' into an odd-man rush.

Weegar looked fantastic…maybe a bit of an anomaly night, but he looks capable of filling Ekblad’s skates. Huberdeau and Barkov – so good. They might put up numbers like the dorks up north if they played 25 minutes a night in a crappy division.

Some combo of Canes/Cats/Bolts playoff series will be fun.

To be clear: 13:39 EV; 22:17 total. Barkov the only forward to play more (23:55).

T-1st with 6 shots, and lead with 4 hits. Looked more confident to me tonight, too.

I had this game on my laptop during the Flames game, so my attention wasn't 100%, but re: bolded I noticed that too. It was a perfectly placed dump-in.

I don't know how a guy like Versteeg could watch that game and not think this guy is a center. Back-to-back career highs in time-on-ice during two crucial games for positioning. Kind of bittersweet to see him get all that opportunity.

Weegar has gone from a bottom pair/7th dman to a top pairing guy in a single year. He's been incredible all year and is making Yandle superfluous.

And yeah, I've been sticking with this team through all the down periods purely because I believe in Barkov and Huberdeau to lead this team somewhere.

Another good game against a great team. This division is absolute murder this year with both the Lightning and Hurricanes playing so well.

Not sure what y'all are talking about here - on the second goal to make it a tie game 1-1, the one on which Bennett got an assist, he wasn't the one who dumped it in at the red line. Benny was playing high, was the first in, and ended up stripping the puck off of a Carolina player and knocking it to his teammate behind the net, which led to the one-time pass. It was a good play, and the type you'd expect out of Bennett.
