First of all it's elk, not elks. And they have antlers, not horns.
EE is a double fail. No good.

Got me thinking - who used the running horse logo first? Stamps or SMU?

There is much controversy over who wore the pony logo first and whether it was an infringement of of the Ford Mustang Trademark . In fact there is an urban legend that the Ford Mustang was named after the football team . It is pretty much a fact that Ford came up with the logo first for their car that was first in production in 1964. It wasn’t until four years later that it turns out both SMU and the Stampeders both debuted a white pony on their helmets. As for who owns the trademark? Well Ford did try to trademark the horse logo in Canada, suing the Stamps and as best I can tell from a little research the two settled out of court and is more than likely the reason for the two different logos the Stamps use. Mustang has the Canadian Trademark for the “tail down pony” for clothing and other merchandise while Calgary can keep the tail up logo for the uniforms. This is why if you buy a jersey it will have the tail down logo , while the on-field jerseys the players wear has the same tail up logo that is on the helmet. It also seems that SMU and the Stampeders both have separate trademark registrations for what is essentially the same logo. Trademark law is not cut and dry.

The mating calls of the elk and the Edmontonian sound very similar.

Seems to me Elk is preferred plural form, but Elks is not incorrect either. My Dad the hunter would only say Elk.

elk
noun, plural elks, (especially collectively) elk for 1, 2.
Anyone who wrongly complains about "Elks" not being a real world should be forced to cheer for the Toronto Maple Leaves.
Especially someone with aspirations of being a sports journalist who should know to check a dictionary to see if a word is real

That’s weirdly personal and inflammatory…
And I support “elks” sounds weird, Merriam-Webster dictionary even lists the plural as “usually ‘elk’”

Dang, you sure got me there. (Do they still count as aspirations if you're already accredited? Hard to say.)
It's technically a word. Sure. Does anybody really use it? No, because it's awkward. It'd be like if you named a team "the Gooses."

Was just going to say that.
Also ELK lines up perfectly with Edmonton. The S looks like an afterthought.
The name is orginal, but kind of meh.
The logo is slick, and the helmets are great.
Why stick with E names if you aren't staying with the EE logo?

A group of elk can also be referred to as a "gang".

I assume they will sometimes still use the EE logo on special occasions, like Labour Day.

But seriously... lol! The folks up north already had a football team to be embarrassed of, now they have a team name and logo that matches the ineptitude and buffoonery of their team!

On the radio this afternoon they said that they contacted the people at Oxford dictionary along with a linguist expert at the University of Alberta to determine and confirm that Elks is in fact the correct plural use of the word.

Everyone has different tastes. I think Kraken is is dated and would have preferred Sockeyes.
Other dumb or boring names:
Cubs, Maple Leafs, Lakers, Dolphins, Red Sox. These all seemed to have worked.

If the Elk are wearing their "horns" helmet on Labour Day, would it be too politically incorrect for the Stamps to resurrect the Six Shooter swag?

I don’t care about the name but that’s a great helmet. Plus they can just keep using the EE too.

Helmet is kinda cool but what a terrible decision. The Elks lmao.
I also hate the primary logo but the two antlers making the football is cool.
I've been laughing at it all afternoon.
