Unless the T&C involves them footing the bill forget it. Otherwise we don't have them anywhere close to 'over a barrel'. They allowed a situation to develop where nobody wants to touch this nonsense anymore, let them be the ones who should suffer the consequences of that.

I've been all for the Olympics since day one, and for me it's two things. Firstly, it's seeing critical city infrastructure getting built, which could include a (sorely needed) new stadium and arena, an LRT connection to the airport and more downtown high-rise hotels. Olympics would be the right 'kick in the ass' that these types of developments need in order to proceed.

Secondly, I love sports, I want to see the world's best come and play in our backyard and I want to see many of our local businesses benefit from the associated tourism. I'd like to see Calgary established as a leader in sports, athletic and leisure industries (and its associated corporate industries) as a way to diversify our local economy.

That's just my opinion though, and I know most don't share it. And that's totally okay.

yeah, that's ridiculous.

I'd be curious to see how much this gives a boost to mass transit infrastructure. That's the biggest item of value we'd get out of this. Other than that, I'm not too keep on the Olympics. Depending on the bill.

Not as big as I think people are assuming it will be. I doubt there's much appetite to bury/elevate the C-Train lines, as enormously beneficial as it would be to do so even without Olympic funding. We already have a massive north-south C-Train proposal being acted upon independent of the Olympics. Road access to Lake Louise is in desperate need of enlargement but you already have environmentalists shrieking about that so I doubt any events will be occurring there to warrant Olympic funds being spent on it.

We'll probably finally (F-I-N-A-L-L-Y) have some form of digital ticketing system implemented but it shouldn't require the ####ing Olympics to implement something the vast majority of large developed cities have already caught onto years ago.

Ultimately I still don't see where the provincial/federal money comes from. 2019 is just a terrible year to be bidding with both a provincial and federal election on tap. Gonna be virtually impossible to secure money when the parties that can secure it are facing their demise. The IOC's desperation though is highly enjoyable, and it cements my belief we shouldn't bid at all, or more to the point, we should push this as far as possible, string them along, and then withdraw from consideration. If only that didn't cost millions of dollars...

Living and working in the NW I see the legacy of 88 everywhere. I encounter athletes all the time from many nations - they train at the Oval and COP.

I think '88 was about the last time I was at the T&C, is that place still open?

Nenshi has been clear there is no way a big could go through without provincial and federal support, and just a bid itself is expected to cost $25-$30 million.

He also referenced the IOC’s ‘New Norm’ document, which proposes a more cost-effective Olympic structure.

“There’s a lot in there that we could work with, quick frankly if the IOC hadn’t done that, then we wouldn’t be entertaining bidding,” he said.

Last month, the IOC also pledged Calgary would receive at least $975 million in funding if it won the bid.
Quote:
But Kyle Ripley, the city’s director of recreation and 2026 bid project team said local officials have been given reassurance that old facilities from the 1988 Games will be reused.

“The IOC sees the Saddledome as a facility acceptable for hosting the ice hockey and figure skating competitions,” Ripley said. “The IOC is adamant that no new facilities be built for the Games unless there is an existing need or a strong business case for the facility with or without the Olympics.”

My enjoyment of the Olympics isn't based on how much money is spent on it.

It amazes me that it cost $30M to put in a bid. I know you can't just draw up plans on a napkin but that is a staggering amount of money for a concept.

You seem to be implying that no one here will want the Olympics if there isn't a new arena attached to the bid. I'm telling you that isn't the case.
