To be clear, he thinks they are among the finalists, and that there are even more unfamiliar names on the list.

My suspicion is the finalists in Anaheim and Calgary include some unfamiliar names. For the Ducks, my guess is that list includes Randy Carlyle and Travis Green. Word is they are getting close to a decision. For the Flames, it includes Glen Gulutzan and Mike Yeo.

Hearing TB associate coach Rick Bowness went deep into the mix for ANA job. Interesting. That's a name that wasn't out there.

Lake Erie just won the Calder Cup (hard to believe a Cleveland-based sports team actually won a championship). If Jared Bednar is on Treliving's list, he could be getting a phone call soon.

Man could you imagine if they take all this time to unearth a new head coach that is envisioned to be part of a long term progression and announce Mike Yeo? A guy that was going to be fired a season ago but got bailed out by a goaltender only to come back next season with the same issue of players criticizing and disappoint results proving he is what he is. I realize Hartley's team had poor possession numbers and all but I simply don't see how Yeo would represent an upgrade.

I'd be fine with Yeo as an assistant, no thanks as the head coach.

Garrioch is reporting a rumor that Gulutzan was in Calgary last week meeting with Murray Edwards and Ken King.

If this rumour was true, you would think it's already a done deal. I would think meeting with KK and Edwards would be the final step in interview process. I would also think if you made it that far into interview process, that it would be pretty hard not to get the job. Only way a candidate could lose out on a job after meeting Edwards and KK was telling them to go ******* themselves.

Which if the rumour whores is right?

I hope they are all wrong, BT runs a tight ship unless he needs to whip up a media frenzy like he did with KR.

Agreed, We're screwed if that's the first part of the interview process.

What do people think about Gulutzen if these rumours turn out to be accurate?

He had a lot of success as head coach in the ECHL (although no championships), but his two seasons as head coach of the Dallas Stars were not overly successful (no playoffs). He's been an assistant in Vancouver since then, working with Tortorella and Desjardins. Those aren't the most inspiring coaching mentors, and Vancouver hasn't been very good. In fact they are no good.

I think I'm open to the idea of an emerging, lesser known coach, but should the team move in that direction, I'd like to see someone who has won at other levels. I'm not sure Gulutzen is that guy.

A bit of a head-scratcher for me, but I must admit that I don't know much about him beyond a bit of Internet research. What do others think?

I'm comfortable with Gulutzan. Previous experience as an NHL head coach, educated as a teacher, paid his dues and worked his way up through the ranks. My only question is can he get the players to buy in & play the physical puck possession style Treliving & Burke long for. However that can be said for anyone.

I remember Friedman saying that former Raptors head coach Brendan Malone told him that on every team a good axiom for a coach is that 5 players will love you 5 players will hate you & everyone else is in the middle. He then said that one of your biggest tasks as a coach is to help the one who like you influence buy in & work ethic of the whole rather than the ones who hate you.

He actually has a very decent coaching record and experience.

- played pro hockey;
- long time assistant coach in NHL with the Penguins;
- one successful AHL season as head coach guiding team to finals;
- out of 4 seasons as head coach in NHL, missed playoffs first year, 1st round second year, and made it to second round the last two years.

Of course, we all know about his incidents with the Wild, but the question has to be asked was it his fault or is the team dysfunctional?

I really question the way that Wild team has been built. It has a bit of "inmates running the asylum" type feel to it as they have too many core local guys on big contracts.

Yeo's team were never Truculent which is why I don't think it happens.

Am I missing something with Gulutzan? He had some decent success in the ECHL but outside of that a pretty unremarkable resume. I assume he gives a very good interview and knows what Treliving wants to hear but I don't see what makes him highly regarded and what's so great about the work he's done in Vancouver? It's not like that team is any good as that staff got schooled by Harley in last year's playoffs.

Garrioch can't even get rumors from his own market right. I doubt he's plugged into Calgary.
