Karaganov is believed to be one of the architects of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and has frequently provided an ideological justification for waging war on that country.


Laid out in an article titled "A Difficult but Necessary Decision," Karaganov's thinking appears to be that to prevent a civilization-ending nuclear war, Russia needs to lower the threshold for using nuclear weapons and consider initiating a smaller, containable attack that will split the NATO alliance and ensure Russia emerges victorious against Ukraine.


He says the only way Russia may be able to break the will of Western countries so they stop helping Ukraine is by launching nuclear weapons at "a bunch of targets in a number of countries."

Stopped reading at this part because of how idiotic that article is (the globalaffairs link, not the CBC article).

For many years I have studied the history of nuclear strategy and come to an unambiguous, albeit seemingly not quite scientific, conclusion. The creation of nuclear weapons was the result of divine intervention.

It's unfortunate they are so stupid. Dude studied SFA if that's the conclusion he came to.

Yup, and there's things like Russian immigrants. I've had the pleasure of getting to know a former Russian immigrant to Ukraine. He and his family are completely anti-war, moved to western Ukraine after all of the Crimea crap, and finally got all the way out to Poland then Calgary last year.

His immediate family speaks Russian, he has relatives on both sides of the border. If you asked him to self identify before the war, I'm not sure if he would have said Russian or Ukrainian.

So yeah, I'll stand by my belief that statements allocating the worth of human l lives based on imaginary lines on a map is not a great idea, and if this thinking takes hold too strongly, innocent people inevitably suffer.

Prigozhin has been extremely careful never to criticize Putin at any point, but specifically targeted the MoD and Shoigu. Even going so far as to state that Putin has been lied to by Shoigu.

This is a play against Shoigu, not Putin. I have no idea how well that play will turn out for him, but with the deadline set he was forced to do something, and best to do something while he has an army I guess.

So with all the reports that Russia has mined the Zaporizhzhya NPP just like they did with Nova Kakhovka dam, the US is pushing a resolution that the destruction of the nuclear power plant to trigger NATO article 5. Hopefully this stops Putin from issuing any stupid orders.

From a Ukrainian perspective how does all this news influence tactics? is it business as usual? do you push forward even harder on the battlefield to take advantage of all the chaos and uncertainty, or do you pause and see how things begin to play out before making a decision?

That Prigozhin stuff is wild. A lot of people were saying that his agenda all along was to eventually work himself into power and usurp Putin. I don't think he would be any better than Putin, and possibly even worse, but infighting is always welcome.

It is possible those videos of him could be deep fakes?

Putin has been informed of the 'coup' apparently according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, and Wagner (clearly unconfirmed as this is within the past hour) is engaging Russian troops in Bakhmut.

Either way whether it's a cleverly disguised deep fake or not (and there's no appearance to be the case), it doesn't matter, the die has been cast at they are now in a conflict.
