Yeah, he can skip the debate and loop like the presumptive nominee. He could go to the debate, and anyone who criticizes him to his face will be branded un-republican. He could go to the debate and everyone ignores him, and the narrative will be that republicans have moved on from caring about the charges against him.
It's probably better for both sides this way, because he doesn't really want to be here, and in the event that he cannot run, then the actual nominee doesn't have this track-record of either being too critical or not critical enough toward him.
it certainly won't matter in the grand scheme, as Trump will be the nominee anyway - but I'm really happy for Fox and their ratings that he's skipping it. Couldn't happen to a nicer company.
I found it amusing that in the story of Burgum possibly not making the debate due to injuring himself playing basketball, there was this little nugget of how he qualified.
Quote:
He reached the Republican National Committee’s 40,000-unique-donors threshold to qualify for the debate stage in July – he attracted donors by giving away gift cards worth $20 in exchange for $1 donations.
as for the people there, Christie is the only one who seems to actually live in the real world. He gets little credit from me because he too was a Trump brown-noser for years, but at least he found something resembling a spine at some point. He'll be the only one attacking Trump tonight, while the others will fall over themselves to defend the indefensible.
Speaking of the others, it really is a clown show. Fully expect DeSantis to implode for good today, this setting can only hurt him. Never thought a person could have less personality and charisma than a potato, but both him and Pence are giving it a good run. Ramaswamy is a walking filibuster, the guy can surely talk without actually saying something. Hailey runs on "I'm like Trump, but younger and a woman". None of these people are even remotely interesting, so without Trump, it will be a complete disaster for Fox. Good.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said he blames former President Donald Trump for infecting him with coronavirus last year, telling PBS’ Firing LineWith Margaret Hoover he thinks it’s “undeniable” the former president’s lax approach to health precautions led Christie to have such a severe case of Covid-19 that he thought it might kill him.
He's been relentlessly attacking Trump ever since.

Christie just has absolutely no credibility with anyone. He hasn't had any credibility with the foaming-at-the-mouth wing of the GOP (to the extent it's still fair to characterize them as a "wing" and not "the base") ever since this:
... And of course, he has no credibility with anyone who isn't a foaming-at-the-mouth Republican, be they never-Trumper or Democrat, because of this:
I used to think he seemed sincere and principled. I now think he is just a good actor and a capable politician whose allegiance is to whatever is expedient at any particular political moment. Right now, it's Trump-bashing. If Trump wins the nomination and these indictments don't stop him, Christie will fall in line again, I'm sure.

That tweet is from April and Carlson is no longer with Fox.
