My son downloaded them from somewhere (I don't know where and I don't want to ask). They've been put onto a couple of laptop computers so I do have the songs so we don't have to actually go and find them again. We do have them, which makes this job of restoring them less annoying.

Hey, the thought has occured to me that I have a backup device called clickfree. It's slightly larger than my iPhone in size. I connect it and it automatically backs up everything on my computer. Rather than dumping my songs onto CD, how can I back these up onto my main computer so that my songs are also backed up there so a restore should then be easy? This clickfree would act much like your backup hard drive.
Reminds me that I need to do a backup. I haven't done one for about three weeks and that's not good. It's sitting right here in my office and a backup takes almost no time.

Anyone had to get a warranty repair yet?
The switch on the side that turns the ringer on/off broke off on mine, and I need to get it fixed. Anyone been through this process?
I've heard they'll send you a new one, and you send your back in an exchange process. Hope this is true, because I don't want some crappy loaner phone while it's repaired.

That just happened to me a couple of days ago as well. I was planning on going to the Apple store on the weekend to deal with it.

Well.. really the only way to load songs onto an iPhone is using iTunes, so the music is SOMEWHERE on one of your computers, and you just have to sync the phone. Did you or your son sync the phone the first time?
The only other alternative for putting music on the phone is with little applications like Sharepod, but it doesn't sound like you're advanced enough to use that.

Yes that should work. It isn't terribly important how the files are preserved as long as they are preserved in some form.
If the music in question was downloaded from anywhere other than Itunes there is a very high probability that there is no drm (copy protection) on the files, so you should be able to move or share those files with any computer or mp3 player.
The only time you'll run into issue is when you buy content from the itunes store itself and then try to move or share the files, because content from the itunes store comes with protection built in (although not on music as of last month). My guess is that your kid did not buy all the music from itunes, so you should be good to go.

ml_Ipod for Winamp now supports the iPhone (all generations). I'm using that to get songs onto my iPhone from my work PC.

Just to add to my lost post, the notes on that link say that songs uploaded with ml_Ipod aren't yet compatible with iTunes 8 - but in fact they are. The latest download is actually a patched version that has the compatibility - the dev team just hasn't updated the version page.

I had a problem with my screen. I made an appointment with an Apple "genius", backed up my phone, took the phone in and demonstrated the problem, and they gave me a new one on the spot. Great system.

I'm pretty sure he would have. It's far too much of a pain in the ass not to use iTunes.
Did you ASK him?

I'm wondering if the confusion here is that the songs themselves didn't come from the itunes store. He would have more than likely used itunes to get the songs on the phone, but he wouldn't have needed itunes to get the song in the first place.
That being said, if he did in fact put the songs on the ipod using itunes, they should have been copied into the library.

Exactly, I don't understand how MoneyGuy is having a problem then.

You can keep your library cleared though, so it's possibly they aren't showing up that way. Perhaps you could try going to:
itunes --> preferences --> advanced
That should give you the location of your itunes library. You should be able to go to it and see if your files exist there. That may not even work, but I'm fresh out of ideas beyond that.

One reason is that you can't. I manage the content of my iPhone both at home (via iTunes) and at work (via Winamp). With iTunes, you can only manage an iPhone with one PC - which is a truly ridiculous restriction.
