Thanks sec for making this thread an amazing read tonight!
My hope is that the flames deal Kadri, Coleman, and Anderson. Then over pay (1 year deals) for guys with something to prove (coming off a down season or injury) who have upside to increase in value by the trade deadline. Then, retain 50%, and trade them. Rinse and repeat for the next two years to stockpile picks, along with aiding the objective that shall not be named.

The rest of his work has been quite solid. I really like the Coronato extension. Last year's draft was outstanding. Zarubin had 93.5%. Battaglia had 90 points in the OHL. Mews was over a point per game as a defenseman. Luke Misa was extremely good value. Hoskin had a great first year. Gridin did about as well as we could have hoped. And even for the 2023 draft, most of the picks outside of Honzek look pretty solid, especially Suniev. And even Honzek isn't terrible. It's just that most of the players drafted around him are looking a lot better (Sandin-Pellika, Moore, Perreault, Stenberg, Musty, Ritchie, Cowan, Nadeau, Edstrom, Cristall, etc.)

Conroy takes too much flak for the Honzek pick. He was always a project and we saw last preseason and even in his NHL time what Conroy and the scouts saw in him. If he can stay healthy and keep developing, flames have a big speedy power forward who can drive the net.

That's awesome to know- I've always cheered for Glass to find his place in the league. I would love to have him here.

Agreed, Honzek looked great in camp. I was surprised at how NHL ready he looked, and how well he used his size. If he gets another year training with Pospisil then I can see him becoming a PPG player in the AHL, and securing a roster spot with the Flames by the end of next season.
Also there are only 3 players drafted after Honzek(5GP) with more NHL games played from the 2023 draft: Moore (9GP, 4A), Ritchie(7GP, 1G), and Cagoni(6GP, 2A). As things stand in a redraft Honzek would probably be drafted in the 20-30 range which isn't far off #16.

I also agree, I was happy to see him use his frame against pro competition. Honzek is 20, and already has a full season of pro under his belt- he looks good to me.

I know there was talk of playing Honzek down the middle and he spent some time there for the Wranglers, which may have contributed to his counting stats not being overly strong.
Anyone know how much time he spent at C and what his usage was? Did he play all situations/tough mins? Can’t recall exactly where I heard it from but I recall hearing a comparison that, I think, sounded good. Martin Handzus. Big-fast 3C with some skill. If that who he turns out to be, I’d take that all day long.

Hanzus was a pretty good player, but he was a good 3rd line centre who needed PP time to get to his 39 point average.
I think we need to be aiming higher.

Someone else could answer more definitively, but I don't think he played a significant amount at C...

I mean a guy like Danielson looks like he might end up as a Hanzus type player. Not sure how he is still a top prospect and Honzek is a miss in some folks minds given their respective numbers in junior and the AHL.

Anton Lundell is a Handzus type of player? He has 2 cups.
If you look at the best forward of the cup winning teams since the cap was introduced.
Elite offensive C:
Crosby x 3
Getzlaf x 1
Staal x 1
2-Way C:
Toews x 3
Barkov x 2
Kopitar x 2
Bergeron x 1
O'Rielly x 1
Datsyuk x 1
Eichel x 1
Star offensive W:
Kucherov x 2
Ovechkin x 1
Kane and Zetterberg are the only forwards that could be labelled the best on their teams. Zetterberg is also a Selke type winger.
I'm not sure why people think we need stars, and those stars have to be 100+ point guys. 200-foot 2-way players win more cups.
Crosby in his last 2 cups played more of a 200-foot game and gave up numbers to play a well-rounded game.

Danielson had 39 points in 71 AHL games this season- you can’t ask much more from a 20 year old. He’s going to be a solid NHLer, even if he isn’t playing on a top line.

That's kind of a the problem with him as it seems like most of his seasons get derailed due to injury. He's still only 20 years old but it would be nice for him to one day put a full season together whether it be in the WHL or NHL.
