Eric Francis article
http://www.calgarysun.com/2016/06/09...h-before-draft
Quote:
“We haven’t made a decision but we’re down to a short list,” said the Flames president of hockey operations Thursday, while toting a shotgun used to shoot clay pigeons south of the city at his Targets For Kids fundraiser for KidSport Calgary.
“You’d like him in place sooner rather than later because we have a development camp (in early July) and you’d like him to look at the young players. But as far as being in place before the draft — that’d be nice but it’s not a top priority.”
Fact is, Burke and his staff don’t put much stock into anything coaches have to say when it comes to formulating a draft plan anyway.
“No, the coaches don’t see most of the (draft eligible) players — they don’t get good looks at them,” he reasoned.
“It’s different in the NFL, where they use so much video and the head coach has a good sense of the players. In hockey the coaches are there at the draft usually to meet the kid and get a relationship with him.”
That will very likely happen.
Or may not.
Getting it right is clearly far more important to GM Brad Treliving than getting it right now.

Great news everyone! Francis doesn't think the new coach is getting hired before the draft.
Meaning, the new coach is probably getting hired before the draft.

He played a total of two seasons with the Flames 15 years ago, as a spare part. It's not like we're handing the keys over to some Flames old boy like Lanny or Conroy here....that would be an Oiler move as you say.
Boughner has a legitimate coaching resume. He's spent time working his way up to the NHL level. I would have zero qualms with him being given a shot based on the current stable of potential coaches left.

Seems this is more of a case where a candidate just happens to be an ex-Flame. Why do you think this is behaving like the Oilers?

Definetely don't want to make much ado about nothing, but I agree. Simply because, the Flames seem to be a very buttoned down Org. and that includes playing nice with the NHL. Although it wouldn't distract all fans, I'm sure the Flames don't want to ruffle the greater NHL goals by distracting hockey fans in Calgary from the SCF by announcing our new coach until the season is done.

Personally I think they really want to interview a coach in the cup finals.
Could be Steve Spott or could be Boughner but one of those two guys is probably high on the Flames list.

Staying away from a coach because they used to be a Flame is just as stupid as hiring one because used to be a Flame. Where they played shouldn't even factor into the discussion.

Rick Tocchett was an assistant in Phoenix, now with the Pens; was BT there at the time?

Nope - think that was before him and it was only for a season.
Reason I picked out those two names was because Treliving mentioned prioritizing coaches who had built winning programs and had success building something in the past.
Both Spott and Boughner have done that, with Spott spending a long time turning Kitchner into a successful team. Plus had a great single season in the AHL with the Marlies.
Spott also ran one of the top PPs in the league this season (3rd), and special teams was another area of focus that Treliving mentioned.
Plus even though Burke was gone from Toronto by the point when Spott was hired there to coach the Marlies, you have to know that Nonis would have picked his brain for any job there.

The Ducks are wrapping up second interviews for their coaching vacancy. Long search might come to an end next week.

My brother-in-law is flying to Calgary from LAX tonight, and Darryl Sutter is on his plane. What else could that mean but a coaching sign-and-trade?

I think it means they don't have commercial flights going to Vulcan, AB.
