Deadspin reports that Wideman "will tell NHL he was woozy".
People report the Deadspin article on places like CP and people think Wideman is changing his story.
No one actually said they have any inside info. Just one guy expects Wideman to say that. And the further we get from the initial report by Cox, the more it turns into some inside scoop predicting the hearing.

To me, it almost seems like the officials of the game were willing to give Wideman a pass, but then other officials (and their union) probably piped up.
At this point, I think it is all NHL politics. The incident itself is secondary to relationships of the NHL, officials and to a lesser degree, the players.
Also to anyone holding out hope that he isn't suspended, the NHL has already decided to suspend him by suspending him "indefinitely, pending a hearing". If there was any chance that he wasn't going to be suspended, they just would have set a hearing without making the statement that he was suspended in the meantime. Not that I necessarily agree with a suspension, but it's done. The only question is for how long.
Even though I think it was accidental, it looked bad and the NHL won't want to give an inch on this. It wouldn't take much for a less reputable player to push the issue by hitting officials, but trying to mask it as an accident, therefore they won't give Wideman the benefit of the doubt.
I am guessing he gets 12 games, then the NHLPA appeals, and they settle on ~7 games.
|
They 100% can review video and give a misconduct AFTER the game in these situations...so the "they didn't see it" thing is non-sense
If I were defending Wideman I would be bringing that up right away

I'm sticking with 10 games. The Flames will trot out the overhead view (which seems to be in very short supply), which shows a much better depiction of Wideman trying to avoid the collision.
The issue with the "main view" is you have very bad depth perception from that far away and its hard to tell if he's 2 feet or 10 feet away when he tries to avoid contact. The overhead view shows that much clearer, and I think that will be what saves him from more than 10.

What are you trying to say here....doctor's automatically call it a concussion if you are woozy/foggy?
I suppose it depends on what incompetent doc may be working the emerg when you come in but it is simply not true. They would go through the protocol but not automatically stamp you with the concussion label.

When you're dealing with atheletes who make boat loads of money and consider the pressure to get players back into the lineup quickly and counter that with doctors not wanting to be sued for malpractice... the doctor is going to be careful and say the pro athlete was concussed.

Yeah, I'm getting to the notion that he's going to get a longish suspension, though I believe him and give him the benefit of the doubt. I think it's gotten out of control to the point where they actually can't do anything else regardless of the actual facts.

Don't shoot the messenger, but on the Fan 960 last night they were discussing and yes they said a doc would say if you suffer a hit to the head and are woozy you have a concussion. How bad I don't know.
I am not a doctor.

Who pays for Wideman's flight to Toronto? The team, the NHL, or himself?

Even if woozy =/= concussed, surely it means check for concussions. That's why I say he should be sticking to "I didn't actually see him until too late - I wasn't paying attention" as opposed to woozy. If the latter, he's both changed his story and opened up the Flames to an allegation that they breached protocol.

Don't quote me on this, but IIRC the NHLPA foots the bill.

Which if I recall on the radio they were saying he shouldn't change his story to that.

The Dennis Wideman discipline hearing is still going more than 90 minutes after it started.

It means Burke's getting steamed.
Were the officials represented at the hearing? That's an extra voice at the table.

Apologies if I missed it, but is a representative from the Referees there as well?
