My guess is that the hilt on that lightsaber is actually an exhaust for an overpowered crystal, maybe powerful enough to cut through a standard lightsaber. Looks like a broadsword, acts like a broadsword
Nerd alert.
They Crystals don't actually carry power, they're a focusing element within the lightsabre.
There are no red crystals, the Sith use a synthetic crystal that gives it not only the red color but a slightly more efficient and stable beam.
Ah that's why it looks like it does, from that link:
Quote:
Unstable
Like compressed crystals, unstable crystals were the result of the initiate failing to accurately replicate the natural formation processes of crystals. The blades generated by unstable crystals were obviously more unstable than the norm, causing the blades generated to crackle with energy at erratic intervals, sometimes causing sparks to fly or streaks of electrical energy to run along the length. Due to the energy sparking from the blade, unstable synth-crystals caused more damage than normal when they hit enemies. However, they were much more prone to shorting out, causing the lightsaber to deactivate for a time.

EU garbage...excuse me...Star Wars Legends material isn't canon anymore. Maybe the lightsaber used in the trailer is a mood lightsaber, and it means the wielder is stressed out. We'll have to wait and see.

Put me in the camp that is still waiting for a proper sequel, and won't nitpick Episode VII as long as it has the same spirit as the originals. They were flawed but we still love them.
I might have to ignore this thread, and other discussions on the internet, until the movie comes out so I don't get infected with the need to set an impossible standard of perfection.

Wait wait wait.. focusing the energy of what then? In a Star Wars Clone Wars episode (The Gathering) the Younglings used the crystals as the power source. I think the Clone Wars cartoons are more canon than the fan fiction.

How could anyone demand perfection from Star Wars anymore when the creator himself took a giant #### all over it already?
I mean come on, it seriously can't be worse than what Lucas himself did. I have hope
