I would have thought this impossible at the start of the year. It's been quite a season so far.

Following along on the ideas for Defencemen contracts, what are the thoughts on the Fwds?
I would say:
UFA's:
Sign: Walter
Let Go: Kolanos
RFA's:
Sign: Byron, Bancks, Aliu, Nemisz
Let Go: Wahl, Patterson, Cameron
Propsects:
Sign: Granlund (and Arnold if he wants to)
AHL Fwds:
Byron-Street-Walter
Ferland-Reinhart-Aliu
Howse-Granlund-Nemisz
Elson-Bancks-Eddy
Plus you can give out AHL only contracts to the likes of Sylvester, Laing, Olson, Ruegsegger, maybe 1 or 2 of them have even earned a NHL deal.

Not my camera, someone else that's here tonight, my phone wouldn't take a clear picture, too much glare off the lights on the board.

Another shutout for Laurent Brossoit in a 6-0 Oil Kings win.
Edit: 1.35 G.A.A in January with two SO's.
1.32,GAA in February with three SO's.
It's amazing what a little disappointment will do for some people's motivation.

- Re-sign Breen to a two-year, two-way deal and hope and pray that he wins that #6 job with the Flames. I feel he's almost capable of that role right now.
- Cut ties with Butler.
- Let Culkin stay another year in Quebec. Let him be the leader on the team and rack up the points.
- Sign Wotherspoon to an ELC and let him play full-time with the Heat.
- Either sign Ramage to an ELC or, if Feaster doesn't want to do that, sign him to a PTO and see what he can do with the Heat.

I would not be opposed to seeing Wotherspoon in a Flames jersey next year.

Wotherspoon had an assist and was named 2nd star.
That is all.

I don't think anybody would. If he looks half as dominant against NHL players as he did in the World Juniors, I'd be a happy camper.
Definitely not expecting him to make the Flames though. Can't wait to see him develop his defensive skills under Luke Strand a bit.

Saskatoon Blades win their 13th in a row tonight, Ferland since coming over to Saskatoon has played 20 games, has 24 points and is a +21. He's fitting in nicely with that team.

The Flames desperately need a better 5-6 defensive pairing. Through 51 games this season, Wotherspoon is a +53. He has recorded 35 points (6 g, 29 a) in that span. And like you mentioned, he played really well at the World Juniors.
I don't see any reason he couldn't make the jump to the bigs next year.

There are 3 defensemen from his draft year in the NHL right now and 3 from the draft before.
Playing in the NHL as a defenseman as a 20 year old is a very rare thing and Wotherspoon doesn't seem to be close to that elite level.
The 2009 draft is where you see the guys that have played more games and for a lot of them they are only now starting to be real contributors. So you probably want to wait at least 3 years after the draft before expecting a defenseman to play and that is for the top guys.
At this point Wohterspoon looks far from a lock to be an NHL defenseman so rushing him in next season seems like a bad idea.

I don't think it's ever a good idea to rush any player especially d-men and goalies, but why are you saying Wotherspoon "looks far from a lock to be an NHL d-man?
Judging a player's performance from the World Juniors should not be overplayed, not to mention a player's +/-, but what have you seen to make this judgement? (I'm really more curious than being snarky here with my question; as I wrote above, I do believe it's in a player's best interest to not be rushed to play in the NHL.)

Because 2nd round picks make it to the NHL less than 50% of the time and even WJHC don't always make it to the NHL.
I think he likely plays in the NHL and maybe even a good chance he plays for more than a cup of coffee but to talk about a defenseman playing in the NHL at 20 I would say you need to be a top prospect and a sure thing to play in the NHL.
That isn't an insult to Wotherspoon but a comment on how hard it is to play in the NHL as a 20 year old defenseman.

T.J. Brodie is an excellent defenseman, but I think even HE will admit that he flat-out was not very good as a 20-year-old in the NHL.

Wotherspoon will definitely need some time in Abbotsford, and there's nothing wrong with that at all.

Yeah, anyone that doesn't feel Wotherspoon needs at least a year to get used to the pace of a faster game is absolutely crazy. Even if he needs to spend 2-3 years in the AHL to polish his game there's nothing wrong with that, it isn't his fault that we're starved to see young talent on our NHL team.
