You would think Gaudreau was a pending UFA this year with all the concern over this.
I don't lose sleep at night but I don't consider him a Flame until he signs. That said I think the Flames are monitoring things closely and they aren't going to get caught by surprise like with Erixon. We probably won't even know if anything is up because if something is up the organization would likely look to trade his rights so my assumption is that as long as he's not part of a trade package in the next season or all of a sudden his name pops up in a lot of trade rumours from sources like TSN the organization likely feels he's going to sign a contract.

They can't. That's not at all the same position as what Johnny is in.
I think Johnny will sign with Calgary, but this post makes no sense. These players re enter the draft of they don't sign...
And so what if they again dont sign with their newly drafted team and become a UFA? No one can force a kid to sign a contract.
Also, how come no is freaking out about Gilles. Dude is a monster, must be thinking about signing somewhere else. I mean why would you want to play for the Flames if you're, you know, good?
This is all so stupid.

On June 1, Calgary Flames general manager was forced to deal prospect Tim Erixon as the young defenceman refused to sign an entry-level contract with the club.
The defenceman felt he wouldn't have a legitimate shot at cracking the roster this season and was willing to take his chances in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft if his rights were not traded by the club.
Feaster opted to ship his rights and a fifth-round draft pick to New York Rangers in exchange for forward Roman Horak and two second-round picks.

Agree on Gaudreau, but your not understanding the cba.
Erixon was playing on Sweden, not chl. He therefore could be a free agent after we were unable to sign him. CHL players can't do that. End of story
No, Erixon would have re-entered the Draft. The Rangers wouldn't have given up anything to get his rights if they could have waited 24 hours and signed him for free.
That was changed in the new CBA, and the Flames would have held his rights for another 2 years if he had been drafted under the current CBA.

It's not exactly the same, but teams have 2 years to sign their CHL players before they go back into the draft.
What difference does it make to a team whether they lose a player this way or as a UFA? If I'm not mistaken, Erixon would have gone back into the draft as well and the Flames would have been compensated with the 53rd pick in the draft.
Yes, it is 1%. Devo22 did the work that shows that since the last CBA 2 out of 118 players or 1.7% have "Justin Schultz'd" their way to the free market.

Sorry Thymebalm, I meant you have to include players that forced a trade a la Knight. I was pointing out that "Schultz"ing (sounds dirty) isn't the only endpoint to consider
