I'm not saying that with any shade whatsoever on Kadri. You also have to remember Kadri had himself a crazy contract season in that final year while he won the Stanley Cup.
Sam Bennett is now in that contract year, is 3 years younger than Kadri was at the time, and hey...has 3 points in the first 2 games of the season.
Look out. Sam is going to get paid, and I'd expect it to be in that $8M range (or slightly above), and yes - he is absolutely worth it. Only way it ends up in the 7s is if it's an 8 year deal with Florida. If we're talking a 7 year deal, it'll be above $8M (assuming he has a decent contract year).
Bennett is everything you want in a player, unless you're the worst coached team in the league and management trusts their horrendous coaching hires.
|
Kadri's a good comparable. They both play a hard nosed, sand paper game with decent skill and some durability issues over their careers. Both players are ideal high end second line centres who can be first line centres on weaker teams.
Bennett's younger, and although Kadri's arguably a little more skilled, with cap inflation and a few more years of peak performance on his next contract, he'll gets more money, unless he takes a big discount to stay in Florida (with the tax benefits) like Verhaeghe and Reinhardt.
He's not coming back to Calgary, but it'll be interesting how this plays out (especially with Ekblad due up as well). Zito seems good at being able to keep the band together, but Bennett has already given Florida a discount on his current deal, so maybe he doesn't want to do it again especially if he has a career year.

These contracts don't age well, we all know it. You are paying for past performance.

I’m not arguing for signing Bennett (although one of my favourite players in the league for sure), but more so against that 7x7 for Bennett is a bad contract. It’s not a bad contract, and I think he’ll get more than that if he hits free agency (I also don’t think he will - I think he stays in Florida for something like 8x7M)
I very much do not want the Flames spending money in free agency until the day Cale Makar lands there in 2027…if we’re lucky.

I wonder if the Flames would be in on it
https://twitter.com/user/status/1844814697394258086
Would Liljegren be an upgrade on Pachal or Miromanov? I thought he had some great potential, but coaches just don't trust him enough.
PS: This seems like a classic Treliving, sign a player to a contract, and have instant regret. Glad that's not our problem anymore.

Leafs can't afford Bennett...he is a prime overpay candidate if he hits the market

I'd be interested... assuming the price is low.

But once Mavi signs in Toronto, players will take league minimum to play with him.
I keep hearing that.

Not worth it for a 6/7 defenseman. That's what he would be in Calgary.

The Panthers will pay Bennett and move on from Ekblad.

This is what I’ve heard too.
Florida is very high on Bennett and his skill set.
Not so much with Ekblad, he’s been a bit on the outs going back to last year.

Toronto should move Liljegren to Oilers for Henrique. Cap hits are same and Oilers probably desperate enough to try it.

I was looking at the Panthers’ depth chart a few days ago, and while I can see the argument for moving on from Ekblad, their D looks pretty lacklustre after losing OEL and Montour. I’ve been thinking that, if they expect to make a long cup run, they might be looking for D before the deadline. Rasmus perhaps?

Yes sir.
I’ve heard there’s mutual interest between Florida and Rasmus.
Nothing even remotely close, but I expect to hear/see that pickup by the deadline.
And no, Flames don’t appear to be interested in Ekblad.

@Royle, what could Florida offer which could be compelling? Draft picks appear to be low given their place in the standings. Not sure what prospects they have of value either. Why not to a more borderline team?

Our Jessica Fletcher

Their '26 & '27 first rounders could be 15-25th overall picks.
All of their studs are on retirement contracts now, and aging.

Panthers have a few prospects I would be interested in:
Simon Zether: 6’3” center who is quite underrated.
Jack Devine: RW who has put up impressive numbers in college. He’s American though, so he would be pissed.
Linus Eriksson: Love this kid, details-oriented two-way C. Many had him pegged for the first round in the draft.
Gracyn Sawchyn: Energetic WHL center that most of us are familiar with.
Vlad Lukashevich: Offensive D who was one of the best in the USHL last year.
