Please don't make my brain math at this level. I'm usually just thinking about pizza, so if you have a related question to that, I can be of much more assistance

Best goalie on the planet bar none.

$11.5M-$12M seems about right for him.
He's had one elite year. I guess he's one of the few goalies who's been a stable starter for the past 3 years. That speaks a lot to the volatility in the position right now, which is why turning down an 8 year contract seems crazy.

In order to fulfill that contract, he needs to play as a very high level starter for 11 years straight. When was the last time a goalie did that?

Glenn Hall?
He played in 13 all star games in 14 seasons.

Big difference between what the two Goalies were asking for.

Off the top of my head: Fleury 2007-2021, Lundqvist 2005-2018, Rask 2009-2020, Lou 2000-2018

Yeah I would still not pay a goalie that much. The 4 of them have 1 combined cup win.

Having a good starter but a great team in front of them can get the job done, they just need to get hot in the playoffs.

That's a pretty confident statement considering the factors. Vasilevskiy signed for more than that four years ago, and he's set on becoming the top paid goalie in the league, and arguably is the best goalie in the league.

He just reportedly rejected an $11mil AAV, 8 year deal from the Rangers. So......he will get that from the Rangers if he accepts it. I can't see your logic that he's closer to getting 8X9 and nobody including the Rangers would offer $11AAV (after they just offered it).

Does anyone know if teams can be under the salary cap minimum after the season start? Ie can the flames trade away players at the deadline and then be under the cap minimum?

Can't do it. Only exemption this year is CLB for extenuating circumstances (obviously).

Friedman mentioning that Utah could be a likely candidate to make a big trade this year if they are close to being a playoff team at the trade deadline and if it could help them make it. This feeds into to my 3D-chess plan of cheering for Utah to do well so they their owners push the management to pay for a big acquisition at the deadline. Andersson+ for Tij Iginla please.

That would be so cool. Although I dont think it matters how Tij does, I doubt they'll trade their first ever pick for any trade that's remotely even. We'd have to throw some serious talent + andersson for him IMO
