88 million a year for him alone doesn't leave much for the rest of the team.

He wants the top goalie to make as much as the Top D or Top F.
Will be interesting to see how it plays out. The Rangers without him, are a mediocre team at best. He masks a ton of their issues.

Taking a while to get to 5000

We're likely to find out. Isn't the Rangers owner a bit of a handful? Could get messy.

Also, imagine turning down $704 million because you likely want just a little more...

If I’m Drury, I’m not sure I’m budging.
Is there any other team that’s going to give him $13-14M? And which one? I think Russians do like NY.

Over paying for a goalie seems too risky these days. Long gone are the days where you see several goalies dominate for the better part of a decade.
Just look at the Vezina results over the past 16 years. No goalie has won the Vezina twice in a row since Brodeur since 2007-2008, and only 3 goalies have won it more than once since 2008. In total, 13 goalies have won the award in the past 16 years.
Compare that to the previous 2 decades from 1988-2008 when only 7 goalies in total shared the trophy in those 20 years.
It just seems like there is a lot of parity within the position these days and very few stay at the top for extended periods of time.

Probably get a better view of long term goalie success looking at top 3 or top 5 for Vezina instead of just winner.

They aren't winning without him. Boston budged on Swayman.
They will increase their number.

True, but that sounds like too much work. I suspect the results would show some goalies hanging in there longer, but the overall picture would be the same (less dominance from a select few over the past 16 years).
Maybe if I have time later, I'll do the nerd work to see.

I always thought that goalies should get a higher AAV but a lower teem, to reflect the positions value and longevity. If you are one of the few deserving a second big contract, then you deal later.
If he wants 13m it should be a 5 or 6 year term.

But what is he risking?
An offer at $2.5M per year as the best he can do? He's at the top of his position, there isn't a lot of downside in asking for more.
You don't know you have limited closet space until you have a bigger closet and fill that too.

Best goalie on the planet by a fair margin. I don’t blame him for going after a bigger payday.

Shesterkin might get 8 x 9, but he’s not getting 8 x 11. From the Rangers or anyone else.

If there was ever a time & player worthy of re-setting the goaltending market, it's Shesterkin.
Best goalie on the planet bar none.
$11.5M-$12M seems about right for him.

Except my post was responding to Tbull8's original post mistakenly stating Igor is seeking $88 million PER YEAR...

The Rangers right now have just under 60 million committed to cap next year, but no goalies with NHL games under contract. Both Miller and Lafreniere will be looking for new deals. Panarin will have 1 year left, and so will Trouba
