Ridiculous amounts of cap space, new found love of Russian players, desire for a quick turnaround make it seem in the realm of possibility but I personally don’t buy it

I hope not. He’d only sign in Calgary for something gross

Yeah he is not coming to Calgary unless we would break the bank for him, and we are not in the position to do that for a goalie.
Conory has been very clear he is not going free agent shopping.

1. Would take the richest goalie contract in the history of the NHL to even spark interest from Igor
2. He loves the flashy high calibre US market
3. Has said before he didn’t want to play in Canada
4. Flames couldn’t afford to blow 12.5+ on a goalie for 8Y
5. See #1 and #4
With that said, fwiw my source says there’s no truth to the Flames even inquiring.
Spending that amount on a goalie does nothing for the “rebuild”

I actually liked Wideman during his time here. He was bad in his last year, or two, but I thought he and Gaudreau worked quite well together in 14-15. Wideman put up 15G, and had 56P thanks to Gaudreau finding him.
Brouwer was a disappointment. A grinder getting paid to be a 2nd liner.
Neal was an entitled jerk that got his retirement contract. He's probably the only Flames player I really disliked, and only after he was already gone.
Butler just had a bunch of gaffes in the D-zone because he was slotted too high IMO. I never understood why he was paired with Bouwmeester.

The only players that I could see calgary actively inquiring on, are struggling high ceiling center men under 25 years old. Not a huge list.

The Flames sure seem linked to a lot of goalies lately.
Weren't we looking into Askarov as well?
For me it just seems that the Flames are an easy destination to mention in goalie rumors, because we have 2 unproven goalies to start the season.

The Hockey News links has not reported any actual news or rumours for years now. I think that they basically take twitter posts and put them forward as news or proposals. I know that rumours are not much - but that site in my opinion is entirely speculation more so than actual rumours.

Some updates:
So it sounds like Calgary is listening to offers from a number of teams for Pelletier.
I’m told that none of the offers are earth shattering, but perhaps better than losing the player to waivers if forced to send down.
Now that doesn’t mean this is happening, but it’s being talked about.
#1 - Jacob is in an odd posistion, he needs playing time after the 2 big injuries but the flames really don’t think he’s made enough of a difference at camp to warrant a spot over someone else
#2 - Flames had high hopes for Jacob but the okay of Honzek and Klapka surprised them more than they expected. While both players can be sent down with no rush, Craig is torn on going against his word and not rewarding what he preaches. Might see one or both sent down just until they can make room
#3 - I asked about the seemingly overblown love for Rooney and for some reason the brass (especially Pascal) love his 2 way play and fit on the 4th line. Sadly I don’t see him not starting with the flames, and I know some won’t like that.
#4 - All bets on Vladar getting the start in Vancouver but tonight’s game will seal the deal, look for Cooley to start in the AHL.
#5 - Coronato will be starting in the AHL, Flames happy he started strong but not impressed with his declining play when rosters got stronger and added pressure got to him.
TLDR:
Flames don’t want to lose Pelletier for nothing, they still see the upside.
His play hasn’t done enough to lock him in
Bloated forward group may result in guys being sent down who shouldn’t be based on what they have shown
D is pretty much set now, should see some movement later tonight but could roll over to the morning
1a - Vladar 1b - Wolf

I think that assessment of Coronato is more than fair. I’d like to see Coronato and Honzek on the AHL roster to start the year.
I think Klapka is the stand out and the guy most ready for the NHL.
If we’re moving Pelletier, I’d hope we could extract a 2nd. I’d trade Pelletier for a 2nd right now…but if it’s a 3rd, I guess that’s that. I don’t see where he fits in the NHL - because I don’t see how he fits on this poor roster. If there’s a bottom-6 spot, Honzek beats him for that spot every day.

I have nothing against Rooney. He works hard and is a responsible 4th liner. He also played with pride on the Wranglers which probably isn't easy for guy 4 or 5 years removed from the minors. I just don't think he is worth it for a team that is struggling to find spot for potential up and coming players.

Interesting on Pelletier in the context of Rooney and where the Flames are at in this rebuild.
If they decide to keep Rooney up and lose Pelletier on waivers or if they trade him away for peanuts, it could be the signal that we're in for another long run of middling hockey under Conroy as they try to continue to just be playoff relevant.
Up until this point, most of the decisions he's had to make seem to have been forced upon him because expiring players weren't planning to re-sign -- all while he's been framing this as a retool on the fly.
I've felt that, as the team has been forced to trade off UFAs, his framing has become a bit more of a public relations play to keep the veterans and young players motivated and engaged over the next few years until they rebuild enough to actually compete.
But losing a former first round pick who's excelled in the AHL for nothing, without giving him a long chance in the NHL to prove himself -- at the beginning of a rebuild -- to keep a replacement level fourth liner (with good Character) on the roster, just seems like they've missed the plot.
This isn't like Valimaki where they were potentially on the cusp of being a contender and couldn't hold a spot for him. They are far from really contending. They need to give their young guys opportunities.
If Pelletier gets a decent amount of opportunities and minutes over the next couple months, and doesn't figure it out, make the tough decision then. No need to rush it at this point.
Hopefully, Royle's info around the Flames really liking Pelletier means they'll keep him up and not just lose him... and the rest is just me reading too much into the difficult decisions they've got to make.

I bet it's less than a 3rd. Perhaps a similar prospect on the other side or a later pick.
