They’ll probably trade for or sign another Varsho or Mitch White

Interesting tidbit I read yesterday was that Ohtani didn’t want to answer what name his dog is, is because it was the name of a team he was interested in. Wonder if his name is Dodger? Anyway, if he’s in town next year I’ll be there to give him his boos. Totally used.

Booing the man is one thing but booing his dog is cold.
Anyways, popped into Snet, and clear that Nicholson Smith and Davidi haven't yet gotten their edicts from Shapiro, or any more details we didn't know, as it's the expected stories from both about being close and Ohtani visited Florida etc so there was interest... but now having to pivot.
And Blue Jays fan should take comfort in the fact the team was willing to spend money and they tried to get out of the mid market designation like Milwaukee and Kansis City (but still are).

One has to wonder how much bank the Mariners made off Ichiro back in the day. His career earning with the Mariners is about $140 million. So 2 seasons of Ohtani. It's apparent that the Ohtani money really has nothing to do with baseball and all about the marketing.

It said that with the deferrals in his contract it helps the Dodgers and also his own tax situation.
California has a pretty high tax rate, but one wonders too if the complexity of trying to understand how he could achieve what he's doing by deferring, personal tax wise, within the antiquated CRA rules, was even possible, and thus a barrier to getting the same deal done as he got in LA (assuming the Jays would match $700M or whatever it ended up being to make Ohtani whole, personally)?

As pissed as I am with Morosi atleast he apologized for being misleading.
This guy just said "Surprise, Surprise" with a link to the article making it sound like he did it on purpose to be an attention seeking ######bag.

This reminds me of the time the Leafs were supposedly acquiring Eric Lindros at trade deadline. The media whipped up a fan frenzy. Crested jerseys with 88 were ready to fly off the shelves. Then it didn't happen, Lol.

As an Angels fan, I’m devastated. I knew Ohtani was probably leaving but it doesn’t hurt any less. When I heard the Jays might sign him I was so happy for the sport in Canada.
#### the Dodgers. #### Arte Moreno. #### MLB’s salary structure. #### it all. I’m a weird mix of sad and angry.

Why? They just gave him a Pujols contract. Is he even the second best hitter on the Dodgers?
There's no universe where he's worth twice as much as Mike Trout.

He's a 29-year-old DH with two five-win seasons at the plate. That's good, not elite.
Prince Fielder did that.

I pointed out a similar thing. His war is inflated because of him being good at two positions. He’s not the best hitter or the best pitcher in the league though, but he’s up there. I also I can’t believe I missed it earlier but there are no options in this contract. So it’s a marriage. It’s a unique situation. It’s pure marketing as to why he got this contract. If he didn’t have such a cult following in Japan, he’d never get this. It probably added $20M per season I estimate. I don’t know if that’s widely understood, but we’ll see if other players want mega deals as a result. Now I just hope he’s a dud and the Dodgers get handcuffed to a bad deal. Jays dodged a bullet as there is no way he’s worth that deal in over the long term.

I hate the deal and the economics of baseball but I just can’t hope for this guy to fail. He’s too fun to watch, seems genuinely to love baseball and he’s a unicorn in our era. I don’t think he has to be a dud for this deal to suck.

The other thing is I doubt he pitches for more than 5 seasons of that contract.

This is the biggest risk of that $700M contract IMO.
If he's worth $40M as a batter and $30M as a pitcher then you can kind of Justify $70M (and even that's huge stretch) but he's not pitching the first year of this contract and maybe pitches 5 years max.
At $500-$600M I thought "okay that's probably worth it" but at $700M that's just ridiculous. And he's approaching the age where it's really not worth it potentially.

Ohtani is a top of the rotation "ace" pitcher and a 5+ fWAR DH....when he's healthy.
The only question is how healthy will he be for the duration of the contract.
The guy put up 9 fWAR last season and only pitched half the year.
Plus he's a marketing dream come true.
He's worth most of that contract, no doubt in my mind. Rogers thought so too, because they apparently had an entirely different "unicorn" budget for the jays if they had landed him.
There is also the attraction factor, and the truth is bringing even more talent to the jays would have been much easier with him in the fold.
Invaluable IMO
