The dollar is a unit of exchange. Opinions are not an article of exchange. You don't go down to BrainMart or Thoughts ‘R’ Us and buy a crate of opinions. I can't sell you a $5 opinion, and take back two of your $2 opinions and a dollar in change.
Sports journalists are not paid for their opinions; they are paid to hold an audience's attention so that the audience will see the advertisements that actually pay for the whole show. They may express some of their opinions as part of that product; they may express opinions that are not their own; they may express no opinions at all. It matters very little if the opinions are rational or irrational, defensible or silly.
Allan Maki was paid for the article in which he expressed the opinion that the Flames needed to fire Terry Crisp in the middle of a playoff series. Bruce Dowbiggin was paid for the article in which he expressed the opinion that the Flames were certain to lose Jarome Iginla because they could not afford to re-sign him at 110% of his previous salary. He got his money even though he was factually wrong: the qualifying offer was only 100%, and as we all know, Iginla re-signed and remained with the team for many more years.
These opinions, considered in themselves, were something worse than worthless, but those writers kept their gigs for years because they never missed a deadline, never violated policy, and always got a rise out of enough readers to keep the advertisers happy.
The monetary value of an opinion is precisely zero. The monetary value all comes from the skill with which the audience is entertained, manipulated, or both.

It's great that Coronato had such a good WJC tournament, and I am encouraged that this could bode well for his future as a NHL player. It most likely also doesn't mean anything, which should be precisely the point when attempting to compare him to Dustin Freaking Boyd.

Check who thought Dustin Boyd was a middle 6 forward in this July 2008 poll?
Dustin Freaking Boyd???

• Ten teams ended the season with five (Carolina, Colorado, Dallas, LA, Minnesota, Montreal, Nashville, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Washington).
• Eleven teams ended the season with four (Anaheim, Atlanta, Calgary, Chicago, Florida, NYI, Phoenix, San Jose, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Toronto).
• Only three teams ended with fewer than four (Vancouver with three, and Boston and Columbus with two).
I don't think that the Flames are in such dire straights offensively. I expect that they will probably have five in the +40 range this season, with more in the +25–30 range than last season. I picked "tweener" for Boyd: He was draffted to be a top-six forward, and has been on track with that projection wince the draft. I think that if he scores 30–35 points and plays the full season that we should be pleased. From what we have observed thus far, with an increase in ice-time, with more offensively minded linemates, and with more time on the powerplay, this is a very reasonable expectation for Boyd this season.

I suggested that Coronato was tracking to where Boyd was at age 19. At age 20 he had 60 pts in 66 games in the AHL and had a 13 game call up with the playoff bound Flames.
They both had great U20 tourney's (along with Valimaki and Pelletier and Backlund and Gaudreau and Tkachuk and Lindholm)
Boyd ended up with 220 NHL games and a long career in the KHL.
It was suggested that Coronato might be tracking to Camelleri who got drafted out his 2nd year at U of Michigan with 61 pts in 42 games. Kind of a special player.
Maybe Pavelski might be closer as he broke in with only 16 AHL games as a 22 year old.
But that is getting closer to Brad Marchand mythology where he broke into the NHL in D+5 and an became an elite player in D+10
Coronato turn 20 this November.

Regardless of the WJC results, it's a fairly safe bet when you see the second year production take another leap for a top end player in the NCAA.
If he does so, great. Either way, Coronato has shown enough already to lead me to believe he has a future as a solid second liner and possibly more depending on how his development goes this season. Putting up 18g and 36 points as a rookie is a big deal regardless of what conference you're playing in.

I'm actually kind of impressed. 2008!
Stelmach was premier.
Iggy had 50 goals.
The sub-prime mortgage crisis hit full stride. The world slides into financial shock.
Spotify is launched in Sweden.
Satoshi Nakamoto publishes an essay on Bitcoin.
The large hadron collider is officially inaugurated.
And last but not least a vote on Dustin Boyd was held on the online forum, Calgarypuck.
A year later, I officially join Calgary Puck.
What a time to be alive.

I think Textcritic needs a new user title for that: "Was wrong once in 2008."

Frankly you just never know until the young men play in the NHL. Mangiapane was passed over his draft year, went late in his 2nd eligible year, and now is a top 6 forward on one of the best teams in the NHL. Many people thought Monahan would play his 9 games, then go back to junior.
Coronato may fizzle. He may score 50. Let's see where it goes.
Brad wouldn't have drafted him so high if he didn't believe in his ability. Coronato isn't getting traded unless he pulls an Adam Fox.

In the 2013 he kind of goofed up after picking obvious choice: Monahan as the best prospect but avoided a mistake made by most not picking Baetschi as the #2 prospect.... But skipped over Gaudreau ( Hobey Baker final 3) to pick ---- freshman goalie Jon Gillies.
Wrong once every 5 years?
Pretty sure that anyone following the Flames would have been wrong about Jankowski, Bennett, Valimaki, Baertschi.
