Hathaway:
This is the player he is.
Has that pesky work ethic, loves to forecheck, loves to hit and get in dirty areas
Last year raised eyebrows and was impressive
Kerr has been hearing from everyone (that he has talked to) that isn't a one time thing with Hathaway that unlike Aliu and Cundari this won't be a strong performance over a period or 1 game and Hathaway will come crashing down.
Fitness testing over the last couple years has had Giordano and Hathaway at the top
Pure work ethic and relentless play
In the short period he has been in the NHL he has shown why we like him so much
Hard to find guys that get under the skin and lead a forecheck and hard to play a full season like that (e.g. Ferland)
How did they decide on Hathaway as 1st callup after deadline:
conversations with Hartley, assistant coaches, Brad, Craig and Stockton coaches
there were 4 forwards that deserved callup
decided on Hathaway
over discussion they decided to reward him for his play, the shape that he came into camp, also thought he showed qualities that they were missing and provide some energy
Used the geography to advantage in assigning Hathaway to the ECHL. That way he was much closer to Philly by being Adirondack.
Using the remaining call ups:
Allowed 4 recalls
Used 2 of them (1 on Hathaway and converted Ortio from emergency to regular)
You want to use your young players
Need to make decisions on Group II players (i.e RFAs)
Only so many spots
Injuries are part of the game and when they happen they can use emergency recalls
Time will tell if we have more injuries to use on emergency recalls or they use their remaining callups
It is a discussion we have all the time: Who are the players that are deserving? Who are the players we want to see? What room do we have to call them up?
If there is a guidline on when to use a callup: Ultimately it is Brad's call and its a gut feel and collective group opinion
Playoff status for the Heat:
Playoffs are based on point percentage
Heat currently have .510 percentage which is 6th in the division and need to be in top 4
Obviously need to go on a run, it is possible
We have some winnable games coming up here and have some games in hand
Health?
Kylington is hopefully back from concussion this weekend
Aaron Johnson is injured and might be out for the rest of the year
Limped through the last while, filled injuries with ECHL players on PTO
Klimchuk should be back this weekend
Grant is doing well, started skating on his own, cleared for non-contact in next couple of days. Maybe returns at end of month
AHL Trade Deadline
Added Yann Sauve (on AHL contract)
Has played a few NHL games
6'3'' defenceman not too old
Thought it would be good to add some depth
On adding College or Junior players to Stockton:
Two groups of players - players the Flames own the rights to and free agents
For players that we own: Andersson, Mangiapane (assuming we get him signed), Kanzig - if and when they get eliminated and if we are still playing we would love to bring them in
Just a positive experience for them
We would look at some free agents as well if we really liked them and they felt they would like to join us on a tryout
Time will tell and we will see how playoffs go for not only the Stockton Heat but these other player's respective teams
Shinkaruk:
Has done well
Put him on top line
Started him with Drew Shore and Mason Raymond
Now playing with Freddie Hamilton and Turner Elson is playing on right side
He is as described - skilled player, skates well - skill is how to describe him
good addition on the pp
first couple of games was just adjusting
over last couple of games we have seen good things offensively
Raymond:
been basically a PPG guy
try not to block out the young players but when you have a player like Raymond down there you expect production
been a solid pro down there - talks to young guys and been a positive influence
no question that is not where he wants to be
Recall targets:
depends on who you want to see - are you looking for skill or energy
Forward group: Hunter Shinkaruk, Kenny Agostino - putting up a lot of points, led team last year, Hamilton - solid solid centerman for us, Shore, Elson, Poirier, Arnold, Bryce Van Brabant - big and strong and playing a heavy game for us
Defensive group: Culkin - been playing well, Kulak, Wotherspoon, Sieloff
Can't really say this guy will be the next call up, depends on the situation but those are the group of guys we would be looking to if we decided to make a callup
Would Poulin have merited a look at the NHL?
would be difficult with 3 goalies currently on the NHL roster right now
Kevin has played extremely well for Stockton
Since injury has won us some games and kept us in games
Would he deserve a look based on play? Yes but in our situation it would be difficult
Ortio:
no question he has played his best hockey this season
that is just simply on googling his NHL/AHL stats
