I checked out the first two episodes of House of Cards, and I'm hooked. I thought I was watching a top tier HBO show instead of something made in-house by Netflix. Great acting, great writing, and even a few boobs, it's everything you'd expect from a big budget cable series.
If this is what we can expect from Netflix own productions, then I can't wait until the new Arrested Development

I think it was produced and then shopped to HBO, AMC, Showtime, Netflix etc. Netflix outbid the rest for the rights to air it. It is a good show. Can't wait for season 2 and to see what else Netflix can bring out in the future to compete with the other networks.

It wasn't produced, it was pitched to each of them, and Netflix won out, but nothing had been shot up to that point. There was an article about how Netflix used their analytics to indicate that people who watched the original House of Cards and other Fincher productions also watched a lot of Kevin Spacey, and that was part of the reason he was brought in to star in the show.
Of course the article presented this as a bad thing assuming that no one ever in the history of content production/delivery uses analytics to do the exact same thing.

Wasn't HBO and netflix close to a deal a year or so ago? Fell through or something. HBO does allow free streaming of older shows and seasons on some cable providers (such as shaw). Wasn't the majority of The Sopranos up for free on Shaw on Demand quite recently?

Yeah, it's pretty hit or miss though. Right now season two of Game of Thrones is onDemand but who knows when it will be pulled or show up again.
You get it if you subscribe to HBO Canada.. but why isn't the first season up there too?

Shaw on demand online (and app) has a lot more free stuff, but not sure if season 1 is there- or if it is free. Either way, you need to be a subscriber to movie central and HBO to access free content.

I'm selling both seasons on Blu-ray in the Buy-Sell forum. /shameless plug
Netflix has added a bunch of Bollywood and 80's sitcoms lately. I may have to watch some Facts of Life

Is it true they took off Trailer Park Boys on Monday? I'm in the US so I haven't been able to check yet. If so, that makes me sad, even though I've watched every episode at least 9 times already.

Every title says "We are having trouble with this title right now. Try again later."
