Nah, that ship has sailed.
This group isn’t one add away from competing with the top dogs, and it needs a heroic effort just to squeeze into the playoffs with the worst goaltending in the league.
I’d take calls on Hanifin at 50%, and I would be speaking to Lindholm’s agent about his warmth to re-signing. If it’s anything less than “I want to be a Calgary Flame for life” I take calls on him too.
Huberdeau and Weegar are here. They’re committed. We’re committed. The cap is going to be $100M in a couple years, and they have to reach the floor somehow. I think Huberdeau is going to be a good player to help bring along younger players as more are inevitably brought up.

Your giving up guys that won’t be here soon to acquire these picks. In some cases you’ll get multiple picks and even prospects a bit further along in their development.
That’s not a lottery dude. Especially when scouting is a Flames strength.
|
I think the conversation was about the Flames using their available cap space to help broker deals, similar to what the Wild did today.
Sure, no argument here. In fact put Kylington on LTIR and use that cap space to gain more picks, if you can. But we’re likely talking about 3rd rounds picks or later. Fine to pick those up where you can and it makes sense.
As far as sending players out for picks, or multiple as you’ve put it, who did you have in mind? Lucic? Ritchie? Stone? The Flames aren’t in position to sell this year. Nor do I see them willing to retain on any of the guys whose deal expires next year. I’ll go out on a limb and say the Flames will stay the course and try to compete next year, as unpopular a direction that will be. I don’t see them selling off players to stockpile picks here in the short term.

Flames retaining 50% on Hanifin? Won’t happen.
They may trade him, in the offseason, but I doubt very much they retain. Not without a stark change in the direction they have set course for here for at least next year.

If someone offers 1st for Toffoli or Weegar or Kadri I will trade them. And convince Coronato to sign. May be Ottowa or Montreal want Weegar.

No you just need to manage your assets. Tanking is terrible for sports.
You can have a young team and still be hungry and competitive.

To add to this, Huberdeau has done very well with Pelletier.
I’d like him to get a crack with Lindholm again. Just because it didn’t work out at the beginning of the year doesn’t mean it can’t again.

I think Pelletier, Gilbert, Duehr and Ruzicka have worked their way into the lineup. Probably displacing Ritchie and Stone next year. Doubt Lucic is back.
So there should be some turnover. Which is needed with the cap.
Will be interesting to see what happens with Wolf, Zary and Coronato.

They won’t, but they should. Both he and Lindholm are crazy valuable as is, but at 50%, they may as well be on ELCs for the value they’d bring.
The return on two of those trades would go a long way to reshaping the future of this team.

Yeah, I understand the appeal of making these moves and the trajectory it could send the team on. It would be exciting. Despite the moves last offseason, they could definitely enter a rebuild in short order.
I just don’t think the organization, Edwards specifically, has any appetite to rebuild. He wants to compete and be in the playoffs. I hope they are able to extend Lindholm but if they’re not I wouldn’t be surprised to see them prioritize a hockey trade over a picks package.
I don’t necessarily agree with that but I think that it’s more likely they continue to try and put a competitive team together. It’s also the reason why I think Treliving may leave this offseason. He may not have the latitude to do what he thinks needs to be done.

Grain of salt time!
Pagnotta lists the Flames as one of five teams linked to Blues D Torrey Krug.

The Fourth Period says we’re in on Colton Parayko. Don’t roast me, I’m just the messenger!

Don't see the fit for a top 4 d-man.
Our defense isn't the problem, our goaltending is.

I would've thought that Parayko is your kind of player (at least when the Flames have Sutter as coach).
Thought he seems to have regressed, and I hate his contract.

If a rebuild happens, will Treliving lead it? Is Calgary confident he can rebuild this thing properly or more of the same?

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Parayko was one of the names rumored to come back in a Hamilton deal before the Flames ended up trading with Carolina. Treliving does have his favorites he pines for.
That said Pagnotta's batting average isn't great lately including his misreporting of Rangers dealings yesterday which he got roasted for.

My doomsday scenario is that Tre walks to Toronto and then mugs GM Sutter lol
