You know, a quick look at hockeydb shows me that since 2010, the Canucks have had less picks than rounds 7 times. Remarkably terrible for a terrible team.

Another 3 times, they had exactly 7 picks. That means in 13 years, they've made just 10 extra picks, and not been a playoff team for most of that time, which shows a remarkable skill in ineptitude.

They've been without a second round pick 8 times in that stretch, and still haven't figured out who to grab players for free instead of giving up assets.

Truly remarkable.

Canadian teams in general are pretty bad at that.

I believe it comes down to a difference in ownership. American owners are often willing to roll the dice and gamble on the success of a long-term plan. Canadians are a lot more risk-averse and tend to prefer a small but guaranteed return in the present over an uncertain return in the future.

100% this. They're under a microscope and lean towards "look at how good THIS season will be" despite Canadian fanbases being more loyal under long term plans. It's so backwards and bizarre.

Conor Garland has switched agents and officially requested a trade.

I suppose being a Trump voting anti-vaxxer doesn't make one feel particularly at home in one of the most left leaning cities in North America.

Lol. Yes it must be political. Can't possibly be the #### show of a franchise.

My god

It's actually because he's not in the top 6, but his general unhappiness about Vancouver as a city has been documented since his first few months here.

WTF do they think 5 million buys if it's not 50 points? That's good value. Especially for a guy who isn't on PP1.

It's easier to understand if you look at how the owners made their money. Edwards, for instance, made his nut in pipelines – an established industry where you maximize profit by minimizing risk. A number of the American owners made their fortunes in new industries where just getting in was a big risk. It would be very surprising if they didn't bring those attitudes to their sports properties.

That is the trade that just keeps giving. A high first round pick in exchange for an awful contract that needs bought out (at significant cost), a discontented undersized 2nd/3rd line player who will require an additional asset to trade.

And all of that was to cover for bad contracts being signed by Benning (Eriksson, Rousell, and Beagle).

It may just be the worst trade for any team in the post cap era.

And to many of us it looked brutal the day it was made.

Be patient ... let the ugly contracts retire in a calendar year and then use the cap space to supplement a young core.

Nuts.

His talent is undeniable so what would the reasons be here? Attitude? Work ethic? Maybe why Canucks management hasn't signed him yet.

The Canucks haven't signed him yet because he has not been open to signing. He's being quite clear, if the team is trash again this year he doesn't want to be here long term.

I don't think anyone can be upset with that. Why would be lock it down in a place he can't win?
