I also buy into the "maximizing performance" issue. If Darryl can do that I will be happy to admit that I've under-rated the role of a good coach. The funny thing is its also the precise reason why Button hired him.
This is what's so exciting about having Sutter back. His greatest strength never struck me as being his coaching of on-ice tactics, it was always about his ability to lead and manage people. He seems to understand what makes people tick and how to influence them to get the most out of them, both in-game and in between games.
That's also part of why I think people who feel his style doesn't match the modern game are likely wrong. The Flames didn't just hire a tactition to run practices and teach fundamentals. They just got a heart transplant.

It didn't seem like a momentous loss. On Nov. 4, the Flames left the ice despondently after a 3-0 loss to mighty Detroit. Not many fans had expected the seven-years-out-of-the-playoffs Flames to match the President's Trophy-bound Red Wings, and maybe the players themselves didn't either. Maybe that was part of the problem.
The Flames trudged into their dressing room and saw no sign of their coach/GM, Darryl Sutter. In fact, they would not see him at all that night. All they saw was his handwriting on the dry-erase board: "Be here 7 a.m."
Message sent. Said veteran forward Krzysztof Oliwa: "I set every alarm clock in the house." And the crack-of-dawn skate the next morning? Assistant Jim Playfair described it with one word: "quiet."
The story is vintage Sutter. Some coaches rant and rave. Others play mind games. Sutter is direct, bluntly honest, and as generous with words as his organization has traditionally been with money.

I think Sutters impact on the D corps is going to stand out the most. I fully expect some pressure to be taken off of Raz and Gio, and a boost of responsibility to Hanifin and Tanev (like they need more, they've been great IMO) but it might break Hanifin lol.
I can forsee a diminishing role for Gio as we go as well, increasing responsibilities for others.
As far as forwards go, I'm wagering that he's gonna break up Monny and Johnny as well. Chucky with Monny and Gaudreau with Lindholm. Pure speculation on my part.
I also forsee about a 6 game absence of Sam Bennett as Sutter tries to crack that enigma and see if he can get him back on track.
I dont think he is going to tinker too much with Backs line or Ryan's line for now. I feel like he is really going to want to set the top 2 lines ablaze and re forge them.
I am pretty interested to see what happens this weekend. Ryan Huska was being touted as a burgeoning future NHL head coach when he was promoted to the Flames two years ago, and now he gets a small taste behind the bench. It was also interesting to hear Sutter talk today about trying to add him to his own staff a few years ago.

I don't think this is an elite team, IMO they are missing some key pieces.
I do think they have a lot of talent though, and it's seemed to me like they are never as good or consistent as they should be (except for the 2018/19 regular season). It's like the leadership group is lacking.
A good coach should be able to fix that. Now they have a good coach. Darryl will be the leader.
I feel like we have to somehow counter the Sutter move. But how?
....Return of MacT?

Well, at least the morning show on 1260 can bring back "Sad Sutter".
What a piss-poor week of hockey for Oilers fans.

It's actually impressive how much of an old boy's club the NHL is. Nepotism is the name of the game.

Sutter will be a great hire. The battle of Alberta is going to get even harder.

Ward should have been fired when the sens won those two games against the flames

Mangiapane, Backlund, Anderson, Tkachuk, etc basically everyone will get better imo and have the ability to play Sutter hockey, they don't have to be big hitters to be tight checkers. I do wonder how Gaudreau will respond to a new system and culture.
Quote:
he's gonna try and turn the Flames into a grinding team like the Kings of 2014 and the Flames of 2004
problem is, the Flames aren't built that way outside of Tkachuk and maybe Bennett
plus, the league has moved away from the size and heaviness of those old Kings teams and way more emphasis on skill and speed
Quote:
I'm not sure he will tbh. I think you'll see a style similar to Tipp or Trotz. Not necessarily grinding hockey but tight checking defensively responsible.
And if he does push towards a grinding type of play I think that benefits Tkachuk, mangiapane, Backlund, Gio, Lucic, etc, etc they have a fair amount of players who can play that style. This is also the guy who made Gaborik work.
Quote:
Haha, Sutter. A fossil of a coach and a ####ty team, Flames suck so bad.
Quote:
I think it will get more boring. Tippett and Sutter will try to "out defense" each other. Going to have 2-1 games because nobody will take any offensive chances.

This is a crazy season. We've seen most Canadian teams go through tire fires and yet with the volume head-to-head format I'm not sure anyone other than Ottawa is out of it. I will say for as embarrassing as the Flamers have been Sutter will get them turned around and quickly. No more shortcuts for players. And a lineup can can be abrasive and greasy with his steel toe boot to their asses. Oh ... and a reset Markstrom...
Quote:
Sutter hire is really bad news for the Oilers. We were all hoping Ward would remain as long as possible.
Sutter will snuff out any locker room conflict and calm things down for the Flames. The Flames were a worse lineup partly due to the dysfunction and infighting. If I know Daryll he will be able to sew those things together and get the Flames playing more responsible and consistent hockey.
Looking at the standings the Oilers are in some trouble currently. Habs have a bead on us despite being lousy, and Flames could get in range with a win on Saturday. Buckle up, gonna be a ride.
Quote:
Sadly, that's a really good move by Calgary. He's exactly the type of coach they need to get those floaters to buy into a hard working culture. I doubt he's any kind of long term fix but in the short term it could give them a boon.

Sutter is referencing the 2004 cup run as 'unfinished business.' Not sure why anyone other than him would care about that. That'd be like us trying to avenge 2006. What's the point when there's no one on the team from then to rally around?

I want to think this is more a product of the fact that we beat the Flames 6-1 and 5-1 in the past week, but it’s really funny having the opposing coach get fired after losing to their team by 4 goals.

It’s a little funny to see a bunch of people predicting Sutter implements things each of them have been advocating, often completely different.
I personally could careless about what Darryl implements. He knows how to coach men. He gets the absolute best out of every single team he has ever coached. And if you can’t play for him we probably do not want the player. Darryl has six 7 game series left in the season, I suspect he will win every single series which should be good enough to get into the dance.
