If they insist on keeping 24 teams I'd like to see four groups of six, eliminate the round of 16 and have the top two in each group advance to the QFs. There'd be better, more competitive groups and it should eliminate playing for 3rd place since it doesn't mean anything.

Couple duds after all the fun this morning. Or can we get a wild final 15 minutes?

Should have scored a couple minutes earlier. Good goal for Ireland.

Belgium scores at the same time to end Zlatan's career with Sweden.

Sorry that I am not up to speed, does a win guarantee Ireland the round of 16?
EDIT: Google says the answer is yes.

Yes, Ireland get France next, so if they haven't had enough bad calls against them they'll be plenty more to come if they get through. Of course there needs to be revenge for 2010 so hopefully that's what happens.

In theory every match in a group stage at a "normal format" tourney could end in a draw and two teams on three draws would go thru.

Good on Ireland they deserved it with a strong effort.
Italy didn't show up - but to completely discount the fact that they had clinched first and rested players would be wrong. Announcers were acting like they beat Italy in the knockout stages and had eliminated them from the tourney.
Hopefully they can shock France now.

Some great storylines for the last 16 though
Spain-Italy - two of the best looking teams so far
Iceland-England - the littlest team versus the most talked about
Ireland-France - No handballs this time
Northern Ireland-Wales - Battle of GB
Portugal-Croatia - Maybe the best player in the tournament against the best looking team

I am just relieved for #20 to be honest.
Had he not provided that perfect cross for the winner I am not sure he would have ever lived down that miss.
1 v 1 vs the keeper and hit it right at him, but then can ping in a pin point cross from 20 yards out.

Ha me too. My mom's side of the family is Irish so this result was great. Italy still finishes 1st and Ireland goes through. Happy for them.
