Aren't they just using a sonar to pick up resonating noise?
Edit: nvm, they are using a passive electronic receiver. Maybe its one of those tracking devices that wild life use to monitor fish migration patterns

This is huge.
Just in time, if that's 370's black box. I'd just about given up hope on the whole thing.

CNN is saying the Chinese ship has had two separate acoustic events. A short one Friday and one that lasted 90s today.
And 300 miles away another ship (British I think?) has also had an acoustic event that they are now investigating. Didn't say if the pings were continuous on that event or if it was only picked up for a brief period of time.
It seems crazy to me that they haven't found one single piece of debris but are potentially picking up pings from the flight data recorders. I also don't understand the 300 miles apart thing. Either one of the ships is picking up a false signal somehow, or the flight data recorders ended up really far apart from each other. Which doesn't really make sense?

Awaiting the inevitable news conference where they state the Malaysian prime minister picked himself up a new set of ping irons........

So, I have this bad feeling that even when they find the FDR/CVR there won't be anything of use on it. If they turned off the acars and transponder, they could've also disabled the FDR/CVR.

Okay. My ignorance is going to be on display again - that can be disabled? Why on earth?

I thought they couldn't disable that. Regardless, it only records two hours of cockpit voice, so anything pertinent will be long gone.

CNN just interviewed the US Navy, on-site
Two separate beacons, approx. 4500 meters deep. Stronger when directly over them, weaker as they pass them.
Been tracking them for 2 hours straight.
Certainly appears they have found it. Same locations the Chinese ship found.

Yeah it's surprising they seemed to have found it when it was thought it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack when they haven't even found the haystack yet.

Makes you wonder what they know that they haven't released since they were able to pinpoint it so relatively quickly.

The Australian ship Ocean Shield detected pings for more than 2 hours first and then 13 minutes again. It is preparing to launch the underwater robot with side scan sonar to locate the source. This is the most promising lead.
The Ocean Shield, and the US ship, is using a towed underwater pinger locator, while the Chinese ship is using a hydrophone held by an operator from the deck. The towed locator is more sensitive and accurate by far, it doesn't sound like the Chinese location will be credible.

Seeing the plane was flown in Australia's general direction, could it be the pilots were trying to seek political asylum in Australia for political reasons? The Malaysian governement didn't want that to come to light lest they lose face so they hid hiding important clues to scuttle the recovery mission. Of course that's my big uneducated consipiracy theory.

For trying to get to Australia, they did a shet job of heading towards it.
These were experienced pilots, they would've been able to properly steer towards Aus if they were making a break for it, as well as properly judging the amount of fuel left/needed. Either someone else was at the controls if they were heading to Aus, or otherwise.

Must be suicide. Turning everything off, cutting back, skirting around Indonesian airspace and then flying off to oblivion.
