Yes, its also pathetic that they don't send their own crews to do EPL, Aussie Rules football, tennis and everything else.
TSN (and Rogers) would be complete idiots to waste the time, effort and resources to duplicate a partner's work.

I'm not sure what the problem is. It makes a lot more sense to negotiate a deal with a network already broadcasting a game then to send our own people. This happens with all TV programming, and radio as well.

so should HNIC do the same? Putting someone elses broadcast on your network when its the number 1 sport in your country only shows that you are cheap.

You realize businesses aren't in business to do whats right or do what we think is the best move right? Thats also exactly why Sportsnet won't change their approach to coverage even slightly unless the numbers come down. Because why would they? Because we all think it sucks? We all think it sucks now and they haven't even fixed audio synching issues. But when you watch thats a tacit endorsement of their crappiness. Hence why if nobody stops watching when it swithches from TSN to Sportsnet, Rogers will not spend another nickel to upgrade coverage. Why should they? They have the rights and they have your eyes on the set. After that, they'll wanna be as cheap as possible.

Because they will have national not regional sponsors and those sponsors are not going to be happy when the public complains about the telecast.
And there are businesses that understand that you can have a good product and make money. And if you dont think that the recent run of signing of TSN personnel is because they want to keep them from gonig to Sportnet and making their broadcast better - well your just not reading the situation right
Rogers is under a great deal of pressure to make the grade with their national telecasts and the NHL will be watching as well as the sponsors who eventually will pay the 5.2 billion tab.

Its going to be different when national media people are ripping them (well at least the ones they don't own). No one in the Calgary media says anything about it... so it doesn't get noticed at the head office in Toronto.

No, if they were cheap, they wouldn't pay to show us any of those American games at all. You're complaining because TSN is paying money to give you bonus hockey. Think about that for a second.

Then why dont we just watch it on the american network - its not bonus coverage when some else is already covering it - its a cheap way to get programming and sell ads on it

The NHL and sponsors (and sponsors in particular since they pay the ad dollars) only care if the ratings are strong. Now of course usually there's a correlation between high quality and strong ratings, but not when it comes to sports because rights can be purchased outright (unlike standard TV where content is usually developped). I expect Sportsnet will improve their coverage (obviously can't get much worse), but I suspect it'll still be second rate to what we see from TSN.

Welcome to every Canadian TV network. Without US based content, they would all get annihilated in the TV ratings and thus cease to exist. Sorry but the US produces better content than Canada on almost everything. Besides we're talking about games that almost always only feature American teams. TSN should shell out a much bigger expense for a likely small TV rating?

This post shows how little you understand the business of sports broadcasting. You don't need to work in that business to know your proposal makes very little sense business wise.

I know that what you are proposing is business suicide. If you are right, why isn't TSN or Sportsnet doing it now? Wouldn't it make sense to do as you say? Is it a secret idea that TSN is aware of?

Every network does it. The games they use American feeds for have a fraction of the viewership and would result in subpar commentary because they usually use the American feeds when they top set(s) of commentators are already being used. This is simply bonus coverage for those fans who will watch any hockey that is on TV.

You really don't see the difference between the weeks premier games and extra content being put on TSN2? You claim to work in the industry but it's obvious to everyone that what you are suggesting is very bad business.
This leads me to wonder about your role "in the industry", is it custodial engineer perhaps? Because if anyone "in the industry" suggested what you did that would be their career path very quickly.
