not gonna be popular with this but i'm used to it. Sean does not have enough talent to be the franchise player. i project him as second line center or bottom 10 first line center. Sean is lacking elite playmaking ability, these kind of skills either are there and you see them immediately or not. 12 assists makes it pretty clear. Second his speed and dynamics is still weak and i see no improvement which is a big red flag. Now i'm not saying he is going to be a bust, i'm just saying monahan is not your new franchise player replacing iginla.

The thing is, he doesn't have to be a prototypical franchise player, and I think everyone is pretty comfortable with that, although I think you are under-rating his offensive abilities. Even if Monahan taps out at a 65–70 point/season centre, he is still a great player for the team to build around. I would agree that he probably does not get the "franchise" tag because of his style of game, but he is still likely to be the next face of the franchise, this team's leader going forward, and arguably its most important player. He is much more Patrice Bergeron than Sidney Crosby, and that's an essential piece to have and to build around.

What does this even mean? Weak compared to what? Have you been timing him in practice? How do you quantify dynamics?
There is nothing wrong with your projection or the concerns about low assist numbers but I do not understand your final point at all.

You maybe be right but you have to take everything into consideration. He's 19 years old, playing against the highest competition he has ever played against in the NHL, in his rookie year, where he saw a fellow prospect get sent down to improve his defensive game. That's a lot to put together. He's not going to be trying his dangles or creative plays cuz he wants to be safe for now. With time comes more confidence, maturity and more freedom to make a mistake or two.
He will be a first line player and likely a franchise player for the Flames.

However all the draft profiles of him called him an elite playmaker and passer. Perhaps we haven't seen that part of his game yet.
I remember my buddy in junior high telling me we should trade Iginla after his rookie year because he wasn't going to get substantially better. Putting hard ceilings on impressive rookies often makes you look foolish later on.
Unless all the scouts were wrong last year Monahan has untapped playmaking ability.

This is it exactly. If anything the fact that he has such a nose for the net is the surprise here, as it's something that wasn't in most of his draft profiles.

Remembering that sick pass he made on the Baertschi goal early in the season makes that easy to believe.

The 2muchwhisky tag is perfect here.
Flames need a 1a or b centre. Need.
There is a decent chance Monahan can be that.
Franchise player? Not even sure what you mean.
No one thinks he's a generational talent. He isn't Sid.
No one thinks he's the next Toews.
Might he possibly become a Kopitar? That might be possible, and would be amazing.
I want this player to be one to help bring this franchise a cup. That's franchise enough for me

Not meaning to pile on but I too don't really agree with everything your saying. For one I think Sean's playmaking has had flashes this season and you can see his vision and hockey IQ are incredibly high, and that's a great thing for a rookie season. Second if you thought his speed and dynamics we're going to increase substantially as his body goes through the toughest season he's been through then I think your a bit off base. That's something to work on heavily in the offseason, now if he comes back next year and we see no improvement then yeah you probably have a point.
Now you could be completely right and better at reading players than me and that's fair. As for the next franchise player tag, I feel like this team is building more of a franchise group, rather than a single player.
