First Line Centre

Given the way the Flames line up now, with Stone and Valimaki coming back soon and Neal week to week, essentially that is adding 2 depth D and a scoring forward looking to bounce back to a lineup that is winning now.
If I am Treliving, I am working the phones on all the targets that can make an impact up front (second line, second PP unit) and I am not occupying much time on depth (unless Stone and Valimaki are further off than we think). Maybe a forward who plays a heavy game, if the prices do not drop on impact forwards, though the patience with Mangiapane seems to be finally yielding a reward, which may mean sticking to the Flames game vs changing for sake of adding a heavy.
I think in a year like this with so many big names being dangled, that patience may be rewarded, and if the prices end up moving into ridiculous range, let them go and hold the assets. But if you strike at the right time, you might get that value deal, from being there at the end when others have settled business, or reading the market and jumping before the prices get desperate.
If the Flames do add a real big fish, like Stone, Duchene or Hayes, then I could see Treliving moving a defenceman, likely Brodie, in the offseason to replenish assets and buy cap space. Not that I want to trade Brodie, but given the depth on D and the expansion draft, he is a guy who could get value returned and not be a pure cap dump.
Frolik is gone in the offseason regardless IMO - his deal is set up well for an internal cap team, and if he isn't on the second line, he isn't worth paying that much when we have Neal making big coin already (who we cannot move, and given his pedigree as a scorer, deserves some patience).
Ideally though, I would like to see a second tier guy as a rental over a big fish that shakes the team up hard and depletes assets. Zuccarello would be my pick

I still don't think Stone is going anywhere

I actually hope Stone does resign in Ottawa. That franchise needs something positive to happen and a player to build around.
So assuming Stone does resign in Ottawa, would his brother waive his NTC to go there? Maybe the Flames could swing a trade for Dzingel and work in a small cap dump at the same time.
To Ottawa:
- 2019 First Round pick
- Michael Stone
- maybe a second tier prospect like Lazar/Quine/Foo if needed
To Calgary:
- Ryan Dzingel
It would leave us with no 1st/2nd round picks this year but you might be able to recoup a couple second rounders by shopping Brodie and Frolik at the draft.
This would leave us with a playoff lineup something like this
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk -Backlund-Dzingel
Bennett-Jankowski-Neil
Frolik-Ryan-Hathaway
Czarnik-Mangiapane
Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Kylington-Andersson
Valimaki-Prout
Smith/BSD

Can someone comment on Ryan Dzingel? I don't know anything about him, and I've never specifically noticed him play. Yet he has put together a couple nice seasons in a row.
Is this a case of playing with really good linemates, or is he legit?

He got on my radar when he was on a line with Tommy Wingels.
Wingels & Dzingel was so much fun to say.
Seems like a late bloomer, but looks legit. Probably gets a lot of choice assignments though, playing on that Ottawa roster.

I haven't watched much Senator hockey but from what I have read Dzingel is a good skater, good shot, so so defensively.

This is such a useless point that keeps getting brought up. It's been brought up soooooo many times and then posters (including myself) have come up with multiple scenarios where it works out. Not saying that those scenarios will happen but its not impossible.
Guess what? If Treliving wants him, he will make it work out. He gets paid to make sure he does.
PS - You make it work by trading Frolik and Brodie in the off-season and bridging Tkachuk (even long-term, I don't think he gets anything over 8 mil)

Hope Treliving hides in the weeds, waits till everyone burns their assets on big moves and swoops in and takes a quality leftover for almost nothing in the final moments of the TDL.
The amateur scouts have done such a good job lately that it'd be disappointing to continually take the bullets out of their chambers.

I have not seen one realistic scenario though.
All i see are moves to free up cap space to sign this guy at 9 million. Then hope this guy only signs for this and that guy settles for less.....because.
Any team can do that in theory.
Reality involves so much more beyond that though, and this isn't picking on just your proposals etc, and if people want to theorize these things thats fine, as this is a rumors thread.

Maybe so but for them and this situation, money just isnt that important.
This contract is about term and structure.
I think Stone would be nuts to not take that offer and run as long as there is lockout protection included.

I still think he costs a first. Don't see why some think his cost would be low. There will be a lot of offers for him.

Stone should take that and run. Win-win situation where Ottawa gets their poster boy and Stone can be the big fish and cornerstone of the franchise.

the second tier moves should be the strategy and if you give up the 1st, the hope is that you get a player that will sign for a few years and is still reasonably young (under 28)
However, i am more than happy to stick with the lineup that got you to 2nd overall

Rangers have recalled Lias Andersson.
Speculation Hayes and/or Zuccarello will be healthy scratched.
