Thumbs down DVD/CD burning

DVD burning.

So I've been making CD's for years and years.. same with DVD's.

Never had a problem, started back in the day with a 1x burner doing conversions off of mp3's I got from logging into people's FTP sites before Napster was around. I've never had this problem.

I'm burning DVd's ISO's using nero. I had a 8x burner and it wouldn't ever burn 12 times additionally it seems to burn slowly - very slowly - regardless of the dics. Finally I decide it was maybe a burner issue so I go and buy a new LG 18x burner.

I'm using Nero 7.7.5.1 and it burns SOOOO SLOWLY!!

It starts off (at least it's burning at 16x) and this is with tons of different media, how you'd expect x16 4:22 expected time... and then it almost hits 0 and there it goes.. 1:05:41... and slowly going now.

I don't write to the HDD first, or make an image etc.

My PC in an A64 3200 @ 2.4 (yeah, getting older model wise, but by no means a slacker) 2 GB of OZS or whatever it was called performance RAM.

My HDD's are seagate 260 and 320 GB HD's both new within the last 12 months both perpendicular drives the latest seagate models.

My computer still churns along with everything else at great speed..

Just these friggin discs

Even making Audio CD's is slow as heck I can have a shower and it's just finishing. Christ I remember buying a 24 speed CDR and having it take like a minute.. This is pathetic - and my whole PC crawls when this is going on too.

if its an ide drive, make sure the setting is set to UDMA 2 or whatever, and not PIO mode. Also, what speed is the discs being written to? Sometimes lower quality discs default to the lowest speed setting. Finally, have you tried flashing the firmware for the burner itself?

Both SATA
Discs have been all different speeds and brands - oh they burn at the right speed - it just takes a really really long time
Firmware's are all up to date

I'm thinking Nero 7.whatever sucks and I should just go back to the last version..

Sigh "arrggg matey"

Okay, there is a big price drop in Intel processors this weekend so I finally decided to get a new computer. I was planning on going as cheap as possible on a new dual core 2 e4400 but the prices looked too good for a better processor. I wanted to stay under $1000 but I ordered an e6750 from NCIX for the sale price of $206.99. With this I needed to upgrade my motherboard, to an Asus P5KC for $158.99, and my memory. I went with the Sonata III case and 500 watt powersupply for $109.99 which included free shipping for the order. A Seagate 500GB hardrive for $100 was also too good to pass up.
Parts and OS totaled after $55 in rebates, $1094.89. I'm getting them to assemble and test it for $25 and after taxes and shipping ins. it comes to about $1300. Still I like my computer, my present $350 Dell is fine for surfing but not much else, and this is not much more than I paid for my first computer. I'm planning on using it as a Home Theater PC and maybe a little gaming. Anyways if you go to NCIX, make sure you go to the sales banner at the top of the page for the best prices.

http://www.ncix.com/

They also price match, so I found this a good site for price comparisons.

Here's my issue: Brand new computer, working fine until today (It's a week old,) when I tried to put a DVD in the player. Doesn't read. Check my device manager and this is what it says:

Quote:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Check the driver and it says that it has the driver and the driver is fine. So what the heck is going on? Do I need to take it back?

From Microsoft's website. I googled your problem.

Hope i've been of some help

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123

Code 39

loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Recommended resolution

loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation');Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

Thank you. I uninstalled the driver, but it doesn't tell me where to go to scan for hardware changes...?

I'd wait to see if others have any suggestions.

If they can't help then, yes, you might have to take it back.

Your warranty will cover that.

I'll keep searching btw.

Found this in regards to Vista.......

This guy suggest doing a system restore.

http://www.codycafe.com/Topics/detai...Channel=Topics

For every one getting Vista be aware: I am not sure as to what update caused this problem and I am not sure if it is only related to the 64-bit versions or if it effects the 32-bit version as well but don't do your updates.

I had my computer set to auto update and after I rebooted one day all of a sudden I had no CD drive or DVD drive. They would show up in the bios and in device manager but not in "computer". In device manager it was showing the device drivers would not load or were corrupted. After spending hours on the phone with Microsoft I still ended up with the same results. So... I decided to and restore my computer to an older date, went back over 5 days, and that fixed my problem. As soon as I did that I turned off auto update and every thing is working fine still. I have not heard or found any where yet where someone has been able to fix this problem with out just doing a system restore. I generally turn off system restore but I am glad I didn't and I probably won't until I know that this problem is fixed from Microsoft.

Other than that I have had a fairly good experience with Vista. A few minor glitches but nothing that couldn't be worked around or by just updating some drivers and such.

So remember error (code39)... you will have to do a system restore to get your drives back.

I'm pretty sure it also applies to Vista.

Option 2:
In device manager under IDE controllers try uninstalling the IDE controller that your drive is connected too then reboot.

Can you do a Windows restore to a point when you know everything worked? That would be the safest bet.

And just doing a quick look, that article LockedOut linked seems to have worked for a number of people.

Well then where's the registry editor? And/or how do I do a system restore to a period a few days ago?

Well I found the registry editor. (I guess I'm smarter than I though.) So I'll try that one first, and if that doesn't work I'll do a system restore.

It does apply to Vista and it apparently worked! Thank-you so much! (Why wouldn't they just tell you it appllies to Vista too? They really dropped the ball there.)

I've got a laptop (Toshiba TECRA A3X - PTA3XC-CP101E) that will not recognize a keystroke, so I can no longer log into it. I can get the ctrl-alt-del command to work to get the login prompt to come p, but I can't type anything into the input boxes. Any ideas?

Does anyone know how I can get an active desktop on Vista? There's a webpage I'd like to use as my background... it has a countdown to the Flames home opener, but I can't seem to get the countdown to work.
