Highlights from the article
Quote from JP
"We have kept him from free agency twice and I don't think we have the resources to keep him from free agency a third time, so I have to investigate what is out there,"
In my view this is clearly a message to the interested teams........
"But my gut feeling is no trade gets done because we value him as one of the five best players in the game, and I don't think people will meet the price tag for that kind of talent."

I think JP is probably aware that shortly after Halladay goes, he follows. Its time for a new direction for this team.

Ooooh thank god.
That guy's downfall was epically painful to watch.
Edit: wait, that means they're on the hook for his entire salary, doesn't it?

I believe it does.... if I recall he has 1 1/2 years remaining on his contract.

Not such a good move then. What's the point of releasing him?

That's what I'm trying to figure out, why release him if you are still on the hook for the entire salary?!

Not the one...

No, he was awful and had zero value to any MLB bullpen. His salary is almost irrelevant to this move, he started bitching and wasn't doing squat so he got dropped.
Frank Thomas all over again, I like that JP has the stones to drop these guys, but quit signing such stupid contracts!

'cause no one would take him with that salary. He's a negative asset at this point.

Blue Jays release BJ Ryan. However, fastballs he threw last week will still be allowed to eventually cross home plate.

He never really recovered 100% from that surgery. Once he lost that fastball, it forced him to completely change how he threw. Once hitters knew he no longer had the heat they were able to wait him out and force him to hit his spots and he just isn't that type of pitcher.
I know people like to mock baseball players for not being real athletes, but find me a more injury prone position that ruins as many careers as Baseball pitcher. Guys bodies aren't beaten up, but one injury and that can pretty much end their ability to compete at that level.

I really liked Ryan, and hope he lands on his feet somewhere. I guess the move had to be done, so no biggie. What I don't like is the way JP handles things. As much as sometimes frankness is a good thing, when he says things that are hurtful stating they didn't have much hope for the guy returning to form, it's a personal blow. JP's an idiot. Do we really want this guy making the deal to trade Halladay?

No, and I hope they get rid of him when they are done finding a way to lose tonight. Find someone who likes and wants to keep Cito.

Actually he was exactly that type of pitcher. Even in his best days, his fastball was only topping out at 92. Obviously he's lost some velocity, but we're not seeing a drop from 95-96 to 88-89. His main issue is control as he can't seem to locate anything on the corners. He always seems to walk an early batter and then tries to overcompensate by leaving everything over the heart of the plate.

So does Ryan show up at the Trop tomorrow sporting Rays gear ala Billy Koch?

I don't think so. Koch took it personally, and took the Jays' money. Ryan has class and never complained once while his job was slipping away.

He didn't really complain like you assert, but he did air his frustrations last week about his playing time. It was a difficult cycle, he wasn't good enough to earn trust of the Manager and he knew he needed to play to hopefully regain consistency and then trust. But, he could do neither of those things.
To the person diminshing the notion of his loss of velocity as the problem:
he did use to sit at 92, but now his fast ball is clocking in at around 85/86. Six mph may not seem like a lot to you, but if you were a big league hitter it would. He wasn't even throwing a batting practice fastball. No one respected his Fastball, and waited for a mistake that was usually a hanging slider smashed to the bleachers. That slider used to be leathel when he had his heater hitting its spots.
I assert that it was the loss of velocity that ended up sealing his fate. This forced him to become a new pitcher, but the Bigs is no place to reinvent yourself.
Also, I am so frustrated watching this beleagured pitching staff. At this rate, we won't be relevant until the yankees and sox go bankrupt. :-(
