I think you can buy it outright from Rogers, but I think the phone is close to $800. I'll have to check that though, my facts could be dead wrong.
edit: Looks like there were rumors of this being an available option but I can't seem to find anything saying that it is currently possible.

I read that Apple is selling unlocked phones in HK, so you might want to see if you can source them online (ebay?)

The Turbo SIM unlock method seems to work for a lot of people no problem as well.

I saw at Future Shop in Northland Mall they had the 8GBs priced at 750 with no contract...

Ok here's a question for you all, before I phone rogers...
What is visual voicemail? As far as I know, it is voicemail that is transferred to text message and then sent to you, so you can check it without listening to your voicemail. Useful for a meeting or whatever.
But how do I set it up on my iPhone? Is there a way?
edit: maybe that was just a pipe dream? I have my voicemail all set up and so on, not really sure if this whole thing is working properly or not?

I could have sworn my buddy told me that they got a voicemail via text, so it got transcribed and then sent to them. Was wondering if I could somehow set that up too, but I guess not. I have the other visual voicemail all set up.

i think you buddy is BSing. Maybe a text telling him he has a voicemail.
You get that it looks like a text from the person that called and it says voicemail in the SMS area but you have to go to voicemail area to see or hear voicemail.

Visual voicemail:
Quote:
When you decline or don’t answer a call, the caller hears a recorded greeting and can leave a voicemail message. On iPhone, visual voicemail lets you see a list of your messages and choose which ones to listen to or delete, without having to listen to prior messages or voice instructions

Rogers has something that turns Voicemail to Text - maybe this is what your friend is talking about...

NOW Available to Rogers customers , another application to save you time - Voicemail to Text spoken through SpinVox, which turns your voicemail messages into text messages and sends them straight to your wireless device. With SpinVox you will receive your messages discreetly and quickly

Yikes. That's actually funny. Reading the fine print on Rogers' website- if I terminate the contract early the maximum penalty is $400. So if I sign a contract and cancel it 2 days later I'm ahead by $50.
Might have to look at Photon's option.

I doubt you'll get much cheaper anywhere else, no matter where you get the phone the non-contract price is very high.

While being less exciting than it sounds, visual voicemail is extremely handy as it saves having to listen through multiple messages to find the one you want.

I punched in some iTunes gift cards into iTunes, and then proceeded to buy a couple of games I wanted from the store...but my account hasn't gone down. Do purchases on the iPhone through iTunes not use the account balance?

Really? I've downloaded apps with my account that is only fueled with gift cards. That being said it's an American account so maybe that doesn't apply to the canadian store.
Edit: looks like it is a problem with the Canadian store. That is very stupid.

I have an iPhone and used to have a Palm Pilot for my PDA. The Palm on/off button eventually wore out from years of use and then became unreliable (sometimes wouldn't work). A friend of mine never turns his iPhone off and at night just turns it to vibrate or something (I'm guessing here) in case it rings. I've been doing this lately and it seems to use very little power in sleep mode.
Do others here keep their iPhone on constantly and never turn it off? If you keep it on, do you worry that the little button in the top corner to put it into sleep mode might wear out like my Palm Pilot's did? If you just leave it on with the screen lit, do you worry that the apps might burn into the screen?
Lots of questions, I realize. Thanks.

I leave mine on all the time, and I have the screen saver or whatever it's called set to a very low time.. so I don't use the button on top to lock it as much. But yeah that'd be one button that could wear out.
I don't leave the screen lit for sure, not so much for burn in but for battery life.

I was in the Apple store yesterday getting my computer replaced, and asked them to look at my iphone. The guy plugged it in to a macbook, looked at the battery history and suggested a 'full restore'... the one thing I hadn't tried in my quest for longer than 2 hours-of-use battery life.
After backing up the apps, pics, etc, He restored the phone to the factory settings. He told me that if the phone wasn't showing signs of battery-life improvement in a couple of days to bring it back to swap it. It's to early to tell if the life is increased, but I didn't lose any apps or data in the process.
At the same time, a guy beside me brought in his *smashed-screen-held-together-with-packing-tape* iphone. It seriously looked like he dropped it in a mosh-pit somewhere, then fixed it at the post-office. I overheard the apple guy tell him that they would swap it, and that he was lucky, because if he had waited a couple of weeks, they probably wouldn't have swapped it.
NEway, I'l post how the battery is holding out in the next couple of days.
