I liked Mike because he was pretty open and honest (to Walt) about what he was, what would happen and how things worked. He wasn't like Walt trying to justify things he did or pretend like he was some noble criminal above everyone else. Mike knew he was doing bad things, didn't care or apologize for it and when it was time to do what was necessary he did it.
Even when Walt was going to kill him he didn't whine like a little baby he understand why it was happening, realized it was part of the life he chose and just wanted to get it over.
I think it's because Mike was made into a sympathetic character by all the parallels between himself and Walt. His suggested honest beginnings and fall into crime. His love for family and the motive of providing for his grand daughters future with the accounts in her name. Even his eventual bonding with Jessie and going from thinking he's a complete waste and a lost cause to seeing his potential and trying to steer him right. Mike slowly gets revealed to be more than just a villian while at the same time Walt falls from noble intentions into becoming a villian himself.
While i see the parallels, the biggest difference is the transition into the life of crime.
Walter's worsening condition with cancer and financial troubles pushed him into making meth. No doubt it was a reluctant choice as Walter had once left making meth but returned realizing he had less and less time to live and couldn't bear to leave a financial burden on his family.
I understand that Mike was trying to leave enough money for his granddaughter's future, but there was nothing that suggests that he was forced him into crime to make that money. Mike could've remained a cop or held multiple jobs. Even if he was blacklisted as being a cop, he could've worked in security for an honest employer and worked part time as a PI. He had so many choices but decided to take the easy way out. Much like how Jesse did when he saw his friend work as a bank mascot.
Even when Walt was going to kill him he didn't whine like a little baby he understand why it was happening, realized it was part of the life he chose and just wanted to get it over.
Mike didnt really have a choice, he was pretty much dead when Walter caught up to him
I'm at episode 8 of season 5 and I'm really starting to dislike Walt, he's an idiot that continues to make things worse because of his ego.

I hated Mike and was glad when Walt finished him. He was a thug and had no rightful high horse.
I disagree that Walt throws people under the bus. He is just a big picture guy, no different than Mike who likely killed a lot of bystanders on behalf of Gus (who was downright evil).
I was glad when Mike was killed.
This is a remarkable human study.

Anna Gunn is not a good actress and her crazy eyes make me uncomfortable.
People don't just hate her because she "holds Walt back" or whatever the silly argument is. They hate her because she's annoying. If we're supposed to think of Walt as the villain by now, then shouldn't we like Skylar "holding him back"?
Mythbusters did a Breaking Bad Special that aired in the US in July. Also, Vince Gilligan is interviewed on the podcast By the Way, In Conversation with Jeff Garlin.
Charlie Rose interview re-ran last night. Very interesting if people can find it. I like how aware everybody on the cast is with fans opinions, especially regarding Skyler hate.
