Eh, I actually don't think Last Jedi is too bad. I didn't like it at the time but Rise of the Skywalker and some of the dopey shows they've put out since makes it look like high cinema in comparison.
I've been watching all the Star Wars movies with my stepdaughters that are 6 & 7 and we've enjoyed them all so far - started with Episode I. We just watched Force Awakens last night and man, what a wasted opportunity. Finn, Rey, and Poe absolutely had the potential to be really interesting and compelling characters/heroes, especially with Finn's implied force sensitivity and feelings (whether romantic or not) about Rey.
Anyway, funny timing for this thread to get bumped.
I liked Force Awaken, its the last Star Wars movie I saw in a theatre with my mom and my dad, and ended a tradition of me and my dad seeing a Star Wars movie in a theatre.
Last Jedi, featured bizarre scripting and story choices, and showed that JJ made a massive mistake and Disney made a massive mistake by not reviewing the script in before it went into production.
Instead we saw the characters of Snoke and Hux ruined. Kylo became an uninteresting villain. WE got Leia Poppins. Luke being written completely out of character. We got super strong Rey who could literally do things that no Jedi Master could do until Disney tried to fix it in Obi Wan. Finn as a character went from someone intriguing to the "Whooo" guy. The movie itself was beautifully filmed and had some great effects and vehicle design. But it as a movie, it probably screwed up any concept that they had for the third film.
The Rise of Skywalker was ridiculous, poorly writte, introduced lore that was beyond silly. The characters literally sleep walked through the film and looked like they just wanted to be done with Star Wars which was confirmed later. Then to apologize for the mess of the last film they bought back Palpatine, and wrecked him as well.
I used to traditionally rewatch the Star Wars films once a year, or whenever they came on TV. But I can't and haven't watched the sequels in years, and prove to believe that Star Wars ended with the scene where Ewoks had just finished eating Storm Trooper captives, Luke had seen his father's somewhat redemption, and the Empire had crumpled.
Maybe someday Disney or someone else will have the guys to wipe the Prequels from Lore and redo the sequels.
Also Disney's EU, for the most part the books, they're poorly written and just not great either.

I think that kind of sums it up. There were characters there, there were story opportunities but they just...left it all on the table. They didnt do anything with any of it.
But in the end, the story sucks, all of the characters suck, they're shallow and thin, they accomplished nothing, the Galaxy is essentially in the same place at the end as when it began.
Unless it was a cautionary tale regarding nihilism and that nothing matters the whole trilogy was a flop. Nobody and nothing matters. All that effort and whopping tales of daring-do and adventure and such and nothing was accomplished.
Everything is in the same place now as when it started. Even if all of the characters are dead.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

BOOURNS. I'm just about to start watching with my daughters, 8 and 6, and they know nothing about Star Wars. It's not often you get to re-live the "I am your father" twist through fresh eyes, and there's no way I want to spoil that for them. Release order all the way

In this instance, it was a case of being an easier entry point to the series for them. Episode I looks and feels more like the movies they know and are familiar with, so it was much easier to get them on board.
EDIT to add: I'll do better with my son who's currently 2 haha

There will be a board of inquiry, charges must be considered and there has to be a legal plan prepared. We cannot let this defenseless youngster be destroyed!

This is an interesting idea on viewing order (from Darth Maul).
Controversial to start with the Clone Wars, but it kind of makes sense for young kids who might not be ready to sit still for a 2 hour live action movie...

I think if you are introducing someone to it, you should do EP 4,5,1,2,3,6. Pretend the sequels don't exist.
I agree that episodes 4 and 5 should be seen first. Half the fun is the mystery around the characters, why they are in the situation they are, and the reveals like who Luke's father is. Spoiling all that with the prequels first takes away a lot of the fun.

My favourite part of TLJ is the highly useable "MORE" meme.
I guess the throne room fight is cool.
The rest is beautifully shot garbage that ####s on George's characters and mythos. It should be fired into the sun for that blasphemy.
I respect the fact that people can disagree and good for them if they enjoyed it, but if they did then it tells me they didn't love and probably didn't care much for the OG Star Wars. If they did then they would recognize that the formula was great and didn't need to be changed.
You have to keep in mind this film was before all the numerous TV series and spinoffs. At that point, it wasn't stale, old or tired. A continuation of George's vision was what the bulk of fans craved and anticipated, as there hadn't been cinematic content in a decade.
So if you loved it FOR breaking the formula and essentially rebelling against everything that came before it, then you're probably not a SW fan. There's absolutely room for those kinds of viewers, but they clearly have little attachment or reverence for the originals.
Really? I remember thinking it was incredibly awkward and poorly choreographed at the time... a quick youtube search confirms that others had similar issues but took more time to actually identify why it came across so weird.

Yeah. I loathe that throne room fight scene. It feels like the movie stops and some kind of Disney ballet scene starts instead.
They kill Snoke - like he's some side character - unceremoniously without any kind of battle. Then they just throw in this ballet "battle", because everyone is bored.
That scene would have been awesome if Rey had took Kylo's hand and the rest of the series was the other characters trying to pull Rey back to the light. You know, some actual character stakes.
But we can't have a hero going bad. Who wants fun storytelling? We should just have them kiss for no reason later. And pigeonhole Finn into just screaming "Rey!" over and over. Thats' what the people want.
I haven't watched TLJ in 6 years so I probably haven't analyzed/re-analyzed it as much as others.
I don't think I took anything about the movie seriously after all that went on at Acht-To. Relative to the uneventful crap that came before it, it as at least mildly fun.
Then the "you're no one" line happened and the we were back to flaccid.

There was no mythos, George himself destroyed it in the Phantom Menace. Remember, everyone, the Force is bugs.
