Good start, though after seeing some stats yesterday the 10 million pound gorilla in the room is around hand gun violence. This I believe does go back to the background checks.

I would have liked to see increased deterrence for gun violence overall and a plan to deal with the illegal guns coming into the U.S.

Its a start, this will be something that's tough to pass, and going after the 2nd amendment with an executive order if it doesn't pass congress is going to be appealed through the Supreme Court.

The banning of assault rifles is pretty cosmetic

Agreed. Almost all gun deaths are from handguns, and a large chunk of those are untraceable.

Question is: How much do gun manufacturers/dealers have to do with how many end up outside the loop? You cannot have background checks being mandatory if no one is monitoring how many guns are bought/sold and to whom

See that's the key question to me, More importantly though we have plants in China and other countries stamping out handguns that end up in America a week later with no over site whatsoever and little cooperation from those governments as they profit from these sales.

That's why there almost needs to be public safety style punishment in the courts systems.

There's that whole Grey area of self defense and home defense law. But I firmly believe that if you use a gun in the commission of a violent crime its life in prison no parole.

At some point there needs to be a very high deterrence level and if deterrence works at least they are off of the streets and gone.

Much stiffer penalties for importation of weapons not declared, selling of weapons commercially without background check (ie. Sale license suspension), or even privately without background checks. Even then, with serial numbers being so easy to file off, it's incredibly difficult.

How many people have to be hit for it to be considered a mass shooting? Because the definition is...

The discharging of firearms multiple times by one or more parties into a group of unarmed victims
But I'm assuming a minimum number of people have to be hit before anyone would actually call it a mass shooting.

When I was in Central Florida a few years ago there was a car dealer giving away an assault rifle with the purchase of any truck above a certain price point. I thought it was a joke!

I just googld it and the dealer was in Sanford. Does that city sound familiar ?
