The Oilers were pathetic and we should have rolled them with Mike Smith as their starting goalie. Too bad Sutter went batkyit crazy and Markstrom, Ras and Hanifin played like pure kyit.

I'm shocked Detroit didn't do more this off-season (they attached a pick to a guy who was a top 4 dman for them in Walman for no reason, and signed Tarasenko and Kane who are both old and fill similar roles IMO) and now we're a week before camp and Seider and Raymond both aren't signed.
In Tampa it gets overlooked but Yzerman's 1st round drafting wasn't great there, but they got some great hits in the later rounds which maybe looks more like a scouting win than a GM win.
Connolly, Namestinikov, Koekkoek, Vasilevskiy, Drouin, Deangelo, Howden, Foote were the first rounders, and outside of Vasilevsky that isn't great.
What he did well though was turn the Drouin miss into Sergachev and a 2nd...and turned Namestinikov, Howden, 2018 1st (Nils Lundqvist), and 2019 2nd (Karl Henriksson) into Mcdonaugh and JT Miller
The big success was they got Kucherov, Point, and Cirelli in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. And then guys like Palat even later. But the problem is drafting those guys outside the 1st round isn't really a replicable plan for success.
In Detroit now hes drafted Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, Cossa, Kasper, Danielson, Sandin-Pellika, Brandsegg-Nygard which looks okay but not amazing at this point. And I don't think I see a Kucherov or Point in his non 1st round picks.

Christine Simpson let go from Sportsnet. Sucks for the person being let go, but honestly the in between bench reporters offer nothing to me, broadcast wise. I don't care to hear player interviews, before, after or during the games as it rarely offers anything of substance. Fluff pieces before the games also don't do much for me as a watcher of the sport. I don't know what else they'd do to fill time but I hope they get creative and look at other avenues rather than pure cost cutting.

Yeah, looking back their drafting is pretty atrocious. Looking back:
2019: he was just hired in April so they probably had their lists, but they had 10 draft picks after their 1st (Seider), only 1 has played NHL games (Soderblom with 21), and only one could still be legitimately called a prospect, I think (Albert Johansson)
2020: 11 draft picks after their 1st (Raymond), no NHL games yet, and I think only Wallinder and maybe Viro could still be considered prospects.
2021: Edvinsson in the 1st, and a few possibilities after that have yet to play (Cossa, Buium, Mazur)
2022: only 2 years ago, but don't see any names that leap out at me
2023: only last year of course, but after their first 3 picks, don't see anyone whose stock is rising, although of course it's still really early.

What’s interesting is for years I would read here how Yzerman knew ‘how to do it’ while the Flames were bumbling idiots.
Building a successful team and organization takes a lot. It’s not one person calling the shots. Each and every GM is a product of their environment.

You know exactly what they're going to do to fill time. More betting ads.

What do you mean, he could have taken league minimum to play with Mavi and Raisaitl? Didn't you read, absolutely every player in the league is taking pay cuts just for a chance to go there.

I remember when Jarmo K was highly praised around these parts. A guy who made big moves and they'd all pay off eventually.

Same with Larkin, who finally hit PPG last season after coming very close the previous two. But while both are very, very good players, neither is elite at this point.

I think Larkin is a star player. He does way more than just score. I mean, look at Jonathan Toews. At one point he was considered top 3 in the NHL and he only once hit PPG or better.

Probably right, at least at that price tag. But one would think it's not about money for him anymore.

Yeah and would've had another if he had joined the Panthers who were after him at the deadline. Chose Detroit instead. He chose poorly.

Well he has his money too. But yeah, maybe he didn't like the grinding system of Maurice, at least he said that Lalonde was a major reason for him choosing Detroit.

One of the remaining veteran free agent goaltenders is Antti Raanta, but don’t expect his name to be added to the list of players accepting PTOs. The veteran told Ilta-Sanomat’s Sami Hoffren that he has decided that his playing days in North America have come to an end.

Interesting guy for me.
Had all the tools and even put up decent numbers a few different times but could never put it all together to be a real #1 guy other than that 1 year in Arizona.
