You know, I do need to make a correction upon reviewing the fine print, as it’s been a few years:
Teams are only required to insure through life/AD 1 year of a players salary; however, that’s only there to mandate teams to have coverage to manage these issues within their financial means and not be reliant on league support should something like this occur.
That doesn’t change that teams are committed to the contracts as a consequence of death. Every team in aware of, including flames, elects to cover the guaranteed contracts through their internal insurance programs. That’s really the business of the team, as they are liable either way; and quite frankly, the insurance isn’t terribly expensive because of the rarity of how often these events occur. It would be business malpractice not to cover.
So my correction is simply the level of NHL mandate on the coverage required; but it’s irrelevant from player perspective.
Lastly, it’s a friendly conversation, meant to be informative during a terrible time. No interest in your accusation or having an immaterial, non friendly discussion on the matter. We’re all here for the same reason with positive vibes for Johnny, and his family.

I keep coming back to forget that it was a famous hockey player. This could have been on my local news and I would still feel the same. A man died last night. Oh wait him AND his brother in a totally senseless, avoidable collision, so that a mother and father lost 2 young sons (same age as 2 of my boys). But they also left behind very young families, wives, children and 1 on on the way. And if that wasn’t enough it was the night before their sisters wedding.
Like the intertwined, layered tragedy is absolutely unfathomable. Their names could have been John and Matthew Smith and I still think I would feel like my heart has been ripped out.

I don’t have the words, I never have the right words. Anything I want to say has already been said in this thread better than I could. I just feel so bad for the family and close friends. I spent the whole day finding stuff to do to keep my mind off this awful tragedy. I cleaned/organized my garage (on the edge of tears multiple times) which I’ve been meaning to do for literally years. I lost a cousin this past week to a stroke who was a year older than me and a good childhood chum (even though as we got older we drifted apart), which doesn’t help.
Such an unnecessary travesty that this piece of garbage decided to drive drunk for probably the thousandth time and it finally caught up to him…and that poor family has to pay the ultimate price. My heart is broken for them.
RIP Johnny

It’s still a big loss of future income for them.
It’s normal for people to worry about their future. What else should they be worried about

My heart breaks for his parents, Parents should never outlive their kids.
My heart breaks for Matt and Johnny's wives and kids who have been robbed of a father, a friend, a role model, and a support system.
My heart breaks for their siblings, its unbelievably hard to wake up and realize that someone isn't there anymore.
What an awful and senseless death, taken out by a scumbag who decided to drive drunk. There is no positive here, none whatsoever.

Maybe I have a kid still. A different kid. But not her. Life's miracles are the culmination of these moments. But today is a reminder that so are life's tragedies.
There is an alternative timeline where Johnny re-signs with the Flames, breaks all the records, and becomes the greatest Flame. And he and Sean grow into the aging vets on the team, mentoring the next generation.
Ultimately the decision that cost Johnny and Matty their lives was made by the murderer who got behind the wheel drunk. But I just can't get it out of my head that it wasn't supposed to be like this. None of it.

I saw that happen, it all play out, not like a dream, but as if that was the future. To me it’s ####ed that it didn’t. Like we’re in the wrong/darkest time line.
The world’s a messed up place, and today just shows that.

Johnny was just so relatable. He just seemed like an everyday normal dude and not an NHL star player the way he carried himself or his upbringing. He and his family were so humble.
I keep looking at the headlines and can't believe it.

This still isn't sinking in fully, it just doesn't feel real. Every time I encounter the headlines popping up on practically every site I frequent, it shocks me again for a moment and then I'm all sad again. I've never been this crushed over a public figure's passing, it's just so unbelievably tragic. I wish I could give every single one of you guys a hug during this awful time.

I got some really rough comments from a coworker. I don't think he had a clue who Gaudreau was, not a hockey guy, but still.
His comments basically came down to "F cyclists, they're a menace". And this guy drives a pretty big car for a living. Luckily he'll retire soon... from everything I've seen he drives very carefully at least while working, I don't think he's a real threat at least at work. Still, the attitude just had me floored and at loss for words. I really just don't understand these kinds of people.
It's absolutely worth talking about drunk driving around this, but the Critical Mass people are also really on to something.
Cycling shouldn't be as dangerous as it is, and a lot of the danger comes from people who just don't care.
Reckless drivers with a attitude problems are a danger to everyone, drunk or not, and a lot more infrastructure should be built to make cycling safe.
Unfortunately, a lot of the same people who complain how cyclists are a menace are the same people who will always oppose spending any money on bike infrastructure. They just don't want them anywhere.

Early in the 2013-14 season I started to lose my hearing in one ear out of nowhere and after the usual doctor visit after doctor visit, it turned out I had a brain tumor pushing on my ear drum. Due to this it was hard for me to watch the Flames, or any team/sport I was passionate about due to even my own screams of joy setting off instant harsh ringing in my ear and headaches. It became a downer to cheer for my favorite team, so I stopped watching games. I basically became a box score junky.
Fast forward a couple years and I start to find ways to cope with it, although still not looking for a reason to set off my ear, I couldn’t help myself to go to a 2015 playoff game against Vancouver. I was willing to leave the game if it got too painful on my ear. It was Game 2 of the series, a game they lost, but I was mesmerized by this little guy wearing number 13. Although, from my box score watching, Johnny didn’t seem to be a superstar yet, he was clearly respected by the opponents. I remember watching Johnny give the puck to Russel on the PP and the defender let Russel walk in and blast it top shelf while he cheated toward Johnny on the other point. This was a playoff game and you just let a dude walk one in on you just to protect against the pass back to Johnny. That’s when I figured this kid must be something special.
The next time I ended up seeing him play live was seven years later in Seattle in a game he went 2G 1A. It made me excited for his future as a Flame. Unfortunately, that future ended a few months later in free agency. I was pretty disappointed, but as I’ve gotten older the easier it is for me to see more in players than just hockey/job. Although if you asked me two days ago, I would have said it was a mistake of his, but clearly this gave him what he wanted and that was more time with his family. Even more important after what happened this week.
For me, no one will ever compare to Iginla when it comes to Flames lore, however, reading about Johnny off the ice it seemed he really cared about not only the game and the Flames franchise, but most importantly the Calgary community. Truly a special person from all accounts. And from what I gather, he still had a piece of Calgary in his heart to this day.
On somewhat of that note, and maybe this is already happening, but I’d love to know every organization that Johnny was behind and loved, particularly in Calgary as a Flame. I figure MADD and other drunk driving organizations will be on the top of everyone’s minds right now, but what was HE passionate about? I’d love to make a bunch of donations. Maybe we can get a list together in another thread and CP can do its thing. Doesn’t matter if people can donate $0.13 or $1300, it would be amazing for us to show those organization he cherished his impact even after his passing. Maybe just a bunch of $13 donations to each organization?
I saw the OhioHealth Foundations Mental Health Services and Programs is one in Columbus, but what about in Calgary? KidSport Calgary is one I found, but there must be more. Google is tough right now as it’s loaded with this latest news. Would love to hear what others remember or have seen with his volunteer work in Calgary.
Sorry for the ramble, I was on vacation when this all went down and just got done from 12 hours of travel back home.
TLDR: What organizations did Johnny advocate for during his time in Calgary so I can donate in his honor?

I bought this jersey in early 2022. Johnny left the team a few months later and I jokingly blamed me buying the jersey for him leaving. Now, I'll cherish it forever:
