Corral is the obvious choice. Even if you hate Calgary's history and identity, you can't argue with the simplicity of a nickname like that.
The Scotiabank Saddledome is "the dome."
What do you people want? "Meet you down at the event centre!" "Gonna head down to the arena early." "I'm so happy they reduced the price of parking to $30 at the Sports Complex!"
Sounds dumb. Corral just rolls of the tongue and you know exactly where you're referring to.
I generally don't like the western-themed stuff, but I seriously dig corral for some reason. I'm not even old enough to know of a time when the original corral was ever important.
Westjet Corral or Telus Corral sounds much better than Centre/Place/Arena.

I guess I'd rather they just call it the "Sponsor Dome" in that case, and we can keep calling it the Dome because that's easier to say than Corrall with it's awkwardly drawn out syllables make it unsuitable for regular use with my busy schedule.
But it's all moot, because to maximize sponsor dollars they will keep it generic. Centre/Arena/Place so that a nickname that doesn't include the expensive advertising becomes more difficult.
But if I really, really got my own way. Say I was an eccentric billionaire, I would just buy the naming rights for myself, call it the Victoria Park Arena, and people could call it "the Vic" or whatever but more importantly we wouldn't need to have a corporate name tied to what is supposedly a source of civic pride because none of the iconic arenas and stadiums are named after corporate sponsors and the best ones are named after the neighborhoods in which they are in.
call it the Victoria Park Arena, and people could call it "the Vic" or whatever
Little-remembered fact:
Before the Corral was built in 1950, the main hockey rink in Calgary was called the Victoria Arena. It was also located in the present-day Stampede grounds.
When the Victoria Arena was built, it was at first named the Horseshoe Arena. I imagine it was renamed because even then, many people in Calgary were ashamed of their Western heritage and desperately afraid that ‘sophisticated’ Easterners would look down on them as hicks. For the same reason, there were loud but ineffective protests against the names ‘Stampede Corral’ and ‘Saddledome’ when those arenas were built.
Some people think culture is something they only have in Europe, and actively despise their own for being different.

Agreed. It is also unique and immediately identifiable (as opposed to Rogers Place and Rogers Center and Rogers Whoknowswhatelse)

Us Lethbians had the Sportsplex for years! I think people still call the "Enmax Centre" the Sportsplex.
Would have been cool if they integrated an e-sports arena component into this project; they're going up everywhere right now and it's a quickly growing entertainment platform with real revenue focused on younger generations.
