This is true but often when you use up cap space, it’s a longer commitment. So I think he was right to hold onto the space until the team was competitive.

Mason Raymond was signed to a bad contract at a time when the team had cap space. Before the end of his contract the team wanted the space back and had to buy him out.

And ultimately I think Feater tried to use the space and we are all probably thankful he was unsuccessful.

Taking a big swing at Brad Richards and missing isn't exactly holding onto the cap space though. Seems like they were willing to spend the money but players didn't want to come to Calgary. Likely why Wideman got 5.25 x 5.
