Actually had something similar almost happen me with them taxiing to the gate here at YYC a couple of years ago. Making the turn to line up with the gate you suddenly felt the whole plane start sliding sideways, the captain was quick on a reverser and stopped the slide, dumping a whole bunch of snow on the wing!

200 ? The reversers cannot be deployed in this fashion on the CFM without likely stalling the engines.

Nope, this was 3 years ago and a 700 series. I guess the captain went for it knowing the risk of stalling the engine. I was on the side that went into reverse, and I'm pretty sure the engine did not stall.
By the time I was getting off the plane a maintenance guy was up front chatting with the flight crew.

Came in late last night from Miami, but it was only a 747-400 freighter, about 20 minutes later Cargolux showed up with their truly super 747-800 freighter.
No pics from me, I was in the comfort of my own bed watching both inbound on flightradar24.

Something I don't know? The reverse on a high bypass like the cfm isn't as effective as on the jt8d's, and pulling reverse at low speed runs significant FOD risk, but there isn't a particularly high risk of compressor stall.
I am aware of incidents where it was required at low speed and have not heard of it stalling. There have been situations where it has caused FOD damage though.
Wasn't me in YLW, but feel bad for whoever it was. Just like your story Bigtime, it just takes a slick patch of pavement and a strong wind and we can turn into a sailboat.

Perhaps not common, it has happened and will again seeing there are thousands of 56's in use everyday. The possibility of FOD would be of much greater concern but the re-circulation of exhaust gives way to the potential of a stall/surge on the CFM. The Target style reversers are much less effective at any speed compared to the JT8 Clams by a stretch. With a good jab of power most JT8 powered aircraft can do real nice power backs, probably not possible on an NG. Obviously in a situation that merits quick attention you do what you have to, aircraft/engines can be repaired/replaced, people cannot. Most SOP's follow the idle at 60 rule in normal use for good reason however.

Yes, correct. Jt8ds were more prone to compressor stalls in all phases, just an older technology engine. The only jet stall I've personally ever had was on a jt8d, even though I've flown cfm's for much longer.

I'm surprised there's no mention of the 3 separate 787 Dreamliner incidents in three days.

Yeah, a bad run of luck for the 787. However part of me wonders how common this type of stuff was for all new airliners, just that now thanks to the internet and things like twitter every single little thing gets mentioned and spreads across the globe in minutes.
The A380 had the same type of thing happen with all sorts of bad press about teething issues when it entered service.

Oh I agree that it's teething, kind of cool to be the lead airline with a new model, but these things are to be expected.
All planes have these issues. I think I read somewhere that the 777 had a horrible start, only to become royalty.

777-200 was a bloated plane.
It wasnt until the 200ER and 300/ER versions came out that it became a gangbuster.
It was always assumed 767, DC10, MD11 would be replaced by 777 but when airlines start replacing 747, 340s etc then you know the plane is good. Almost too good as it has cannibalized the 747 market somewhat.

What's funny is I always thought the 777 was the replacement variant for the 747. I think the 747 is sexier, and want to fly on one of those over a 777, but if I needed a long range wide body I'd probably get the 777 over the 747.

The JT8D is a wonderful engine, exceptionally tough and reliable.
#2 on the 727 was prone to compressor stall in some crosswind conditions due to the intake design. It was also possible if one of the compressor bleeds stuck open. Boy it could make a tremendous bang, people nearby usually hit the deck as it sounded like a big old shotgun amplified 10 fold.
