I'm OK with no upgrade, but insurance is absolutely necessary. An injury away from Gillies being called up who has been below replacement level in the AHL. They need to grab a decent AHL starter/NHL tweener.
If the talk on them trying to get a LHD is accurate, it would be ridiculous to spend assets on a 9th/10th defenceman with the logic that you are going to churn through Dmen in the playoffs and not have a passable third goalie to play backup if Smith gets hurt again.

Have we heard any rumours about them being interested in a goalie?
It’s starting to seem highly unlikely that they make a goalie movie

You can stick to whatever narrative you want.
We've seen Sidney Crosby make soft AF plays when he quit on both Thierren and Johnston.
We've seen Alex Ovechkin not look like the greatest goal scorer of all time when Adam Oates decided to move him to the RW.
We've seen Hampus Lindholm look worthless under Randy Carlyle and his prayer-based breakouts.
We're watching Drew Doughty mail in a whole season for Desjardins, the most competitive player in the league.
Even Connor McDavid is looking totally spent playing Hitchcock hockey.
Go ahead and tell me those guys aren't great players because they couldn't overcome adversity.
Gulutzan's systems, and philosophies affected Brodie the most out of anyone on this team. In the offensive zone he wanted stationary defensemen to float indiscriminate shots from the blue line, of course that system favoured Giordano and Hamilton more than it favoured Brodie. In the defensive zone he wanted guys to make stationary 10 foot passes to the stationary forward, of course that system worked better for our strongest defensemen who could stand and protect the puck instead of moving their feet and using their elite stretch pass and puck rushing. He wanted Brodie, a guy whose every other play involves a spinorama on his backhand to find the open man, to play on his forehand just because it seemed better on paper.

Gio is a great, great player but that's hyperbole.
Giordano - Wideman was a pretty brutal pairing over the like five seasons they spent together. People might remember the occasional goal but overall they got hammered pretty hard with goals against whenever put together.
Even Giordano - Hamilton was a pretty brutal pairing the first time around under Bob Hartley.
Giordano is more well-rounded than Brodie but he's also been the beneficiary of some partners that have been really, really high-end over the years. He gets a lot of the credit for Dougie Hamilton but Hamilton was and is a top pairing defenseman himself, he was not exactly Deryk Engelland. And talk about Brodie's turnovers totally lacks perspective. Last year the whole story about Kris Letang was turnovers to the point where Penguins fans wanted him off to the sun. Is Kris Letang also not a top pairing D?

I really hope we sell high on him before that, because I can't see us being able to keep him under the cap... would be a shame to lose him for nothing. I can see us getting a really decent prospect or 1st rounder for him.
But it has to be in the off-season. Right now, he plays big minutes on a contending team. It is not worth potentially upsetting chemistry by moving him. Plus, all indications are that he is well liked on the team.
Doing it in the off-season gives the team time to sort things out before camp and the chemistry can be rebuilt from game 1.

I tend to agree that Hanifin, Valimaki, Andersson and Kylington are staples in my top 6 moving forward. Gio is part of the core and Hamonic is RHed, gritty and defensively apt so I prefer them over Brodie.
In a perfect world we could keep all 7 but in a cap world decisions need to be made.

Giordano would be on the top pair of any team I can think of.
What "really really high end" defencemen are you thinking of, aside from Hamilton (which is itself pretty exaggerated)?

That tells me that we need to make a move for Dubnyk. You know, just for mojo.
Although Roloson was undrafted, he signed as a free agent with the Flames after university and the Flames were his first NHL team. The Flames arguably gave up on him too soon.
Edmonton had Dubnyk first and gave up on him too soon. The mojo rules of the universe say that a guaranteed long playoff run is certain if we acquire him.

still have time to sort things out long term wrt goalie and whether Rittich can be the long term answer, but with the expansion draft upcoming, i wonder if a guy like Domingue is traded to become the starter somewhere

More and more convinced we only see minor moves for Flames. They want a read on this team in the playoffs before giving up major assets.

That's one way to flush the most promising season in 30 years, just to "evaluate". There's no guarantee it'll be like this every year for a handful of them.
Don't give up major assets, but also don't leave your guys out to dry while other teams around you beef up.

Burakovsky is the prevailing rumour, at least based upon that one poster that said he has an inside source out east. Presumably an eastern Flames insider specifically, so a scout I guess...?

Friedman speculating Columbus could offer up Wennberg to acquire Duchene. He also thinks the Preds are looking at keeping Duchene long term.

Players don’t tend to sign months before UFA for quite a bit less that projected LOL. And for way less years.

He would be the 8th forward from that draft class that Treliving seems to have an affinity for. He inherited Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk but traded for Shinkaruk, Lazar, Lindholm, and Rychel. Perhaps Treliving views him as a player that is ready to take a big step and pop like Lindholm did for the team this year.

Connolly might be a good add, R-shot with size, plays both wings, can score a little and good on the PK

I think the 2013 draft stuff is just coincidences. I do think Burakovsky is a guy that could "pop" here though
