I think those players would need to look at themselves in the mirror. After all, its the players who play the game.

Speculation that the Flames could pick up some interesting names off waivers:
https://rg.org/news/hockey/source-ra...-nhl-preseason
Quote:
n fact, those three teams all rank in the top 10 of the current waiver priority order due to finishing in the bottom 10 of the 2023-2024 standings. There are some roster holes to plug, especially in Calgary and Anaheim, and a list of intriguing waiver-eligible players is available this fall.
Players like Justin Barron (MTL), Samuel Bolduc (NYI), Ville Heinola (WPG), Zac Jones (NYR), Raphael Lavoie (EDM) and Samuel Poulin (PIT) could all be available on waivers in the right situation.
For a rebuilding club looking to give an opportunity to a younger player, this year’s waiver pool could be one of the more interesting ones. And, let’s not forget that there usually is and likely will be a few surprises.

What he's saying is that the top players in the AHL and other feeder leagues are better than the bottom 18% of NHL players. This stands to reason, because an organization doesn't benefit by having its 23 most skilled players on the major-league roster. A waiver-exempt player will usually be sent to the minors ahead of a slightly worse player who requires waivers, for instance. Teams aren't equally deep at all positions, so a team might (for instance) have a defenceman in the minors who's above replacement level, but no job for him, while they have to play a winger on the NHL roster who is below replacement level. And of course talent isn't evenly distributed among all teams.
None of this is to say that you would have any WAR rating at all. The system isn't designed to account for people who don't play the game and would never be offered an NHL contract.
|
That implies that each team, on average, has 4 or 5 guys in the minors that are better than some of the roster players. Not a chance.
I could accept the argument that there is 1 or 2 per team on average - at most. But not 4-5. Sprots teams are in the business of winning, and you don't do that by leaving 5 guys in the minors, who could help your team.

Some other intriguing names. Hard pass had Lavoie and Poulin.

Both Barron (big offensive RH d-man) and Lavoie (big center) would be interesting to me.
Barron especially - he would be a casualty of the logjam of young dmen in Montreal but 30 points in 94 games in the NHL before turning 23 is pretty good.
I have a feeling he'd be more of a trade candidate than a guy you'd wait to get on waivers, but I'd be fine trading for him.
Edit: Lavoie is actually older than I thought and will be 24 by the time season starts - so that's ones probably a pass for me.

Heinola could sit on our IR rather than Winnipeg's. Nice change of scenery for him.

Looking at that article though and I'm not really seeing it.
Barron is one of 7 dmen listed on cap wages right now and unless Reinbacher makes the team then I don't see any of them getting waived. Even if Reinbacher and Hutson both make it I'd guess they run with 8 dmen before they waive Barron.
Somebody like Struble would be send down first as they are able to be sent down without waivers.

Winnipeg has space for Heinola and he probably won't make it to waivers this year, but he'd be worth picking up if he does. He's been ready to pop for the last two years if not for injuries.

Was interesting listening to him twist himself into a pretzel with Mangiapane.
First he complains that Andrew didn't have enough time on the PP to score, and makes his point by saying Andrew had less PP time than Ruzicka. Says it's hard to get lots of goals when you're not on the PP. Then he points out Andrew had more PP time than Coleman, who scored 30. Also points out Andrew was on the best overall line in the league with Backlund and Coleman. Good job dude, very convincing.
Also, did everyone know Hasek was waived 30 years ago? Check and mate, fools.

I wonder if there's a chance Turcotte slips through the cracks this year.

This ignores the fact Ruzicka only played half the games as a Flame, so they were trying things. And that Ruzicka plays a completely different role than Mangiapane. Flames had way more outside guys than netfront like Ruzicka.
And that Ruzicka had far less time the season before.

Winter is a strange dude, I think he is an Oilers fan. He was throwing some darts our way when Johnny and Matthew left, and said Mangipane wanted to be here long term.

Winter was born in Edmonton and has lived and worked there all his life. His agency is based there.

The Winter interview was super interesting. Not really for any conspiracies about it having to do with him being Edmonton based, but I thought it gave some interesting insight to why we see players do some bizzare stuff sometimes if all agents act like he did in that interivew (maybe he's a unique cat).
I'm sure they get hit with it from the other end by the teams during contract negotiations too, so maybe his view point is required as the counter balance, but it was text book definition of running around and pulling stats in a way that backs up your position (in this case Mang's value), versus letting the stats guide your position. So many holes in everything he was saying, but I must admit, if you are a player and you pay your agent to do this for you, you can see how you'll get twisted in believing you are getting messed around, from ice time to value. No wonder we so many players make baffling decisions where they overplay their hands during negotiation time.

I didn't listen to Francis' interview with Rich Winter. And I'm not going to. But I am curious if Francis did his usual lickspittle routine and help Winter carry water?
