Duh... votes. You already see the Democrats doing it by encroaching on traditional GOP talking points about American exceptionalism at their convention. Biden's speech was basically all cheerleader nationalism. Hillary actually quoted Reagan during her acceptance speech.
The far left are generally not going to vote for the Republicans, and the only reason to pander to them is turnout. But taking the center? Do that, and win OH, PEN and FLA every time. They'll never lose the White House again.

But if the left already have the votes of the center that has been vacated and the right won't move back left, then what incentive is there for them to move to the right?

They don't have the votes of the center, because the center has only been vacated in re: Trump. If they don't move in and build a house there - as they're doing - the GOP can come back in 4 years with someone like Kasich and take back their share of it and Trump can be dismissed as an anomaly.
Someone's going to claim that ground. Right now it looks more likely to be the Democratic party, simply because Bernie notwithstanding, they're less of a shambles than the GOP.

Ok, I see your point. I just don't know if the Republicans can get a more moderate candidate in next time. They might just have passed the tipping point. I do agree that the Democrats could get a stranglehold on the presidency though.
Do you think the Democrats can get back control of one of the houses?

I doubt it.
The GOP have largely sacrificed presidential politics for state and a congressional power, which has been a good trade.
This 'middle' you talk about means lots of different things in various parts of the country.
On the presidential level the democrats have an easy path to the presidency, at the state and local level though they are hamstrung by the process.

Trump giving an anti terrorism speech on the heals of Clinton's speech. Trump seems less animated, tired or groggy.

Trump: "Since my comments, NATO has changed their policy and now have a new division focused on terror threats. Very good."
I'm guessing here, but at some point during his life Trump tried to auto-felate himself.

On the national level, the Democrats are a center-right party.
Bill Clinton and started the move with his tactic of "triangulation" and Obama's commitment to bipartisanship has calcified the party's (edit: GOP) move right.
The GOP is blindly dedicated to partisanship; their relentless opposition to their own ideas has pushed them into an anti-intellectual morass where Paul Ryan is an intellectual heavyweight and Ted Cruz is distinguished.

By god this is bad. Trump sounds half assed and drugged reading off the teleprompter. Highlights so far - Hillary lacks the physical stamina to defeat Isis. Smeagolesque tone "'keep the oil" to the victor goes the spoils speech. WWE Trump trump trump chants. Russia is our friend.

Some people are talking about how he's actually removed a few floating ribs from his rib cage and thats why he is looking more hunched over in his speeches. We've got to investigate such issues, because, frankly a lot of people are talking about it.

I wish Trump would just say "Remember Team America? Remember awesome marionettes? That's how we're beating ISIS mother ####ers". Couldn't be any worse than his attempt at really trying.

“Under those eight years, before Obama came along, we didn’t have a successful radical Islamic terrorist attack in the United States. They all started when [Hillary] Clinton and Obama got into office.”
This is a quote from a speech given today by Rudy Giuliani.

You can't really blame him. He's pimped his 9/11 cred so hard he probably can't even figure out what its battered corpse is.

This is just a variation on the usual GOP talking point of "Bush kept us safe", if you ignore the event that killed 3,000 people. And they usually blame that on Bill Clinton anyway.
