Because they are reacting to a problem instead of having a 5 or 10 year plan.
Here in Manitoba the NDP now has to clean up 5+ years stupidity that the PCs created from healthcare mismanagement, and some of those things include money being thrown at things like you are describing.
Healthcare should be run as an independent non-profit crown corporation, free from stupid politician meddling.

Ah, always nice to see how we can sprinkle some private healthcare services in to save money...
This makes so little sense to me. If you constantly have a nursing shortage, which we seem to, why not hire them into the system? You aren't going to end up hiring too many. How does it make sense to shovel tax dollars to private companies providing exactly the same thing we could get by hiring them directly? But ya, we shoudl probably do more of this, right?
This exact thing is also happening here in Alberta too. I know for a fact.
yet the UCP is not hiring despite the shortages. In fact they're trying to get rid of more nurses.
Kinda wild to me that we have a country wide nursing shortage across multiple health care system jurisdictions, but we can't get it resolved with immigration even though we already bring in too many immigrants.

Its funny because I was having this conversation with an Agency Nurse not too long ago and I asked a similar question.
"Why dont you just try and get hired on?"
And she explained to me that she'd rather work as an Agency Nurse. She gets paid more for fewer hours, she gets different duties, sure she doesnt get the Union protection or the Pension but her #1 reason for not wanting to get hired on?
No having to deal with the Bureaucracy.

Every country in the Western world has a nursing shortage because every country in the Western world has increasing health care demands from an aging population. So Canada is competing against the U.S., UK, France, Australia, Netherlands etc for nurses trained in South Africa, India, and the Philippines. Predictably, the large-scale migration of nurses has now left the source countries themselves with huge nursing shortages (the Philippines alone is short 350k nurses)
Why we can’t train enough medical professionals to meet demand, when huge numbers of qualified applicants are turned away from schools every year, remains a mystery to me. As a recent article in the Economist about the U.S. doctor shortage suggested: “This looks a lot like a labour market that has been rigged in favour of the insiders.”

Who would want to be a nurse now anyway?
What at incredibly difficult job that is extremely under appreciated and stressful beyond belief.
A big part of that problem is the staffing shortage which requires more hours, terrible shifts, burnout, cycle repeats.
Nursing is recession proof, high pay, OT capability, etc. Not all negatives.
But we can't expect nurses to be able to function working repeat 80+ h weeks with no time off constantly.

One problem no one is really talking about is the actual shifts. Not sure if it's the same everywhere (I suspect it is?), but it's 12 hour shifts and that isn't healthy with that level of stress either, especially when half the shifts are overnights
Slightly off topic but the game has also shifted with nurses as well. There are a LOT of clinics who are hiring nurses who have experience for things such as injections in beauty salons and other cosmetic style businesses.
An AHS nurse get's paid fairly well with total compensation being taken into account, but the easy of money being made in the private sector for Botox, injections and more is pretty impressive for a lot of them too.

A nurse I know who was on the frontlines vaccinating the homeless in Vancouver during peak Covid and wearing full hazmat suits daily has done exactly this.
Deal with extreme hours, public pay, harassment, overtime, bureaucracy, seniority garbage like this causing young nurses to burnout with garbage shifts, staff shortages and constantly deal with extreme conditions
Or
Go to a state of the art beauty clinic on a relaxed schedule and paid more with less stress and work, and more social prestige
The private sector, especially the beauty sector that is flourishing, is simply better and more desirable for younger nurses and amplifying the nurse shortage. Canada has a severe structural problem that merely got magnified with the pandemic where throwing money at it may not resolve without a significant shift.

It’d be interesting to see the actual pay comparison breakdowns.
One thing that gets lost on those that rally against the public sector, is that the public sector needs to compete for talent from the same talent pool. There is no talent pool for public sector and one from private sector; they both draw from the same well.
I think everyone should have options in both. However, I do think the public sector needs to offer competitive wages, hours, benefits, and long-term stability to attract the best. If we're going to have both public and private options, that needs to hold extra true.
So private healthcare is taking nurses from the pool? Huh, who could predict that? Maybe if we stopped treating them like trash.
I mean, botox injections are healthcare in only the very loosest sense of the word.
If we're picking new things to add to socialized medicine there's lots of things I'd add before that (physio, optometry, getting an MRI in a timely fashion, dental, etc)

I don't think Fuzz was advocating for the public health sector to start offering botox treatments.
Nursing is unique in this public / private battle for talent, in that generally, there aren't the same rolls in the two streams... Not to the same degree as teaching, for instance.
