I think more than a handful of names have been talked to that we have no clue about. didn't we just hear that Green was getting a 2nd after hearing that we hadn't even asked for permission?
I feel its going to be a name that we weren't even expecting , as far as ongoing quotes go...meaning not Carlyle, Green or Gulatzen
For example, not even talking to Rierden ?.. makes no sense.. he has to be on the list .. theyre letting the speculative names into the media, not the real ones.. thats my opinion

It would be worth it just to troll the North. Thanks for having a statue of our head coach in front of your building haha! Would never happen but it would be funny.

So is it going to be half way through summer before we know?
I guess due diligence is good, but it would be nice to have figured out sooner than later. Going from Brent to Hartley didn't take very long as far as I can recall.

I suspect we will hear just before the draft or just after , definitely in place for July 1
Also remember Bettman hates headline stealing during the finals, so they may already have him and just waiting to announce by now for all we know.
i dont see any assistants in SJ or Pittsburgh we want , so to me that means its either a coach from the AHL finals , or , hes already in place and just waiting to announce after the finals
also -- Hartley was Hired May 31.. Sutter left April 12.. so they have until June 21 to match the days since Hartley was fired may 3

Don't mean to crap on the victoria fans as he had a good regular season there but Dave Lowry would be a bad choice imo. Going from 2nd to 1st in the bc division standings this year was good but he has been upset in the playoffs both times he's had top whl teams and watching victoria over his years his teams seem really undisiciplined, lots of pointless fighting, running around and bad penalties that won't fly at the nhl level.

Nelson's first head coach stint in the UHL (I know what the he'll is that) were:
03/04 .679
04/05 .694
05/06 .717
He then had assistant coaching stints in the AHL and NHL...
Then Since being a head coach in the AHL (playoff appearance every year)
10/11 .569
11/12 .651
12/13 .599
13/14 .546
14/15 .680
Also 15/16 (Grand Rapids) .592
He seemed to get way more out of the Oilers young players than the big club ever could. Also when he came up last year:
His tenure last season saw him with a .420 pct with the Oilers which may not look like much until you look at what Eakins accomplished before Nelson took over with a whopping. 269 pct....... also Nelson did better with a McDavidless, Talbotless, Sekeraless Oilers last year than Mclellan did this year with his .419 pct.
I think he is a good coach and seems to have a pedigree of winning and a way with young players.
the Oilers stain may almost even be washed off of him after being with Grand Rapids for a season.

Going from 2nd to first?? Maybe in the last season tonthis but he originally started with a terrible team. As in almost last in the conference to a team that just barely made it in year after year. The only team that keeps foiling them is Kelowna. Like year after year Kelowna keeps knocking them out whether they are the lowest seed in the West or the best in the best in the league. Ucking Rockets.
Coming from a guy in Kelowna I find your commentary a little funny given the rivalry Victoria and Kelowna have.
Kelowna fan bad mouths Victoria team that is starting to take over number one spot that Kelowna was perennially holding.
I was at game 7 this year Kelowna had no business winning that series. Vollrath let in an extremely weak goal to let the Rockets advance that is not on Lowry.
On the otherside of the conversation I don't want lowry
To get the job because I want him on the Royals.
Edit. Also want to add some of those useless fight wouldn't happen if the Rocket forewards didn't stick work needlessly or take some late runs at the Vic d and or top guys after or hairline closento the whistle.

Nelson is very uncomfortable and unpolished with a microphone in his face. I don't think he could handle a Canadian hockey market.
That said, I think the guy has legitimate potential as a coach. Will he break through? Not sure, but when he was with the Oilers he reminded me of Jim Playfair with the Flames 10 years ago. essentially one of the organization's best prospects was a coach in the AHL. Playfair didn't pan out, but nelson should get a shot again somewhere.

I don't have anything against the Royals, this is not a me vs. you thing. I go to a lot of dub games but I'm not really partisan like I am with the Flames, I'm from Alberta and went to a lot of Canes, Hitmen and AJHL games over the years too. I always try and get out and support local hockey wherever I live.
Lotsof bad minors in games I've been to anecdotally, and some major embarrassing incidents with other non-Rockets WHL teams that I'll link and he's been fined and suspended personally by the league. Hockey fighting has a place but when it hurts your team, you've gone too far. I actually think they were OK this year compared to past years was pretty terrible.
Portland:
https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/jr...130030551.html
Kamloops was also a pretty bad failure to control his team and he was suspended personally:
http://www.vicnews.com/sports/196181341.html
Then coupled with the two first seed teams he's had in Calgary (lost 9 games all season) and this year in Victoria choking in the playoffs, yes here in town and witnessed first hand, I'm not predisposed to think he's a very good coach.
I loved Pie when he was our captain and actually have a jersey of his, so it's not about an axe to grind. I just don't think he's a great coach, and in the interest of the Flames I'd rather not see him become our NHL coach.

Not all shots are the same. A dump in on the goalie from centre has a low probability of going in while a rebound in the slot is a dangerous chance.
Confusing shots for scoring chances is one of the biggest flaws with corsi. It's very similar to plus-minus in usefulness which is to say not very useful.

^every stat is useful, to some degree.
The problem starts when we try to place more significance in it than the data itself dictates.

am curious, is it important that the coaching decision be made prior to the draft? Or is their input not critical enough for draft day decisions to prioritize a coaching hire in time?

I don't think it's critical but it would be beneficial for the new coach to spend time with management and scouting to get a feel for the organizational direction as well as to get acclimated to the prospects that he may be coaching sooner than later.
The fall comes pretty fast so the quicker they find a new coach the more time the coach will have to do his homework on the players and get to work on preseason planning.

Agree about the penalties but disagree strongly about crapping the bed.
The Royals were supposed to be bottom feeders this season as they had lost all of their top 6 fwds pretty much. Again the lone bright spots were supposed to be Soy and Hickets.
Sure they bowed out in the 2nd round, but they certainly didn't choke.
Don't know how much you actually watch the Royals, but their offensive systems play this year and power play were very good.
The Royals had the 2nd best goal differential in the WHL. 281 GF , 166 GA. That screams of solid system play and even if the royals were taking g tons of penalties (which they were slightly above league average) they finished with the 2nd best PK in the league.
I concede the wheels fell off against Kelowna, but they shouldn't have even been in the playoffs in the first place.
They had 13 game winning streak and finished the season 9-0-1. So it's not like they sputtered into the playoffs.
Lowry is the biggest reason for the Royals season.

I think its not too important before the draft, but they will need to have a coach before free agency (july 1) because most players are going to want to know who they are going to be playing for.
Edit: Actually now that they have the 'open discussion week' prior to July 1 they should have a coach in place at that time (June 24ish?)... Which is basically the draft.
