I disagree with the notion that Glencross was a part of the deal. The asset was a second and third round pick in a deep draft.

How young is Dougie Hamilton, you ask?
He's so young that Kenney Morrison (who the Flames just signed this spring as a college free agent) is more than a year older than him.

I will be the first to admit that I was wrong about Phaneuf. I thought for sure he would develop into a stud and the Flames would regret trading him. Enough time has passed to see that clearly was wrong. That stuff about other players thinking he was overrated, no doubt they knew what they were talking about.
Other than the first couple years when he started here, I wonder for a Flames fan when was the last time they had a young guy on their blueline with the kind of overall potential dominant future impact that a guy like Hamilton brings? Probably going back to the Al MacInnis/Gary Suter days.

Hamilton on stage at the Draft with Chiarelli on one side and Benning on the other.
"Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right. Here I am, stuck in the middle with you."
Meanwhile, Don Sweeney is standing over by Neely thinking, "No one can tell how wasted I am right now. I'm totally getting ####ed up like this every year on Draft day."

Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Wideman
Russell - Engelland
Flames didn't just pick up a much-needed #3/4 defenceman, they picked up a defenceman who is basically a superstar already and one who hasn't even hit his prime yet. Plus another right-handed defenceman means everyone gets to play their preferred side. I mean just looking at that makes me drool. I suspect when I wake up tomorrow I will have trouble reconciling today actually happened. Unreal job by Mr. Treliving.

on hfboards they think Treliving blackmailed Boston somehow and others think it will be vetoed by Bettman. This will likely go down as the best trade in Flames history. We absolutely fleeced them, Treliving is a genius. We went from small average d core to one of the best in the league.
Dougie was going to be Charas replacement and Chiarelli screwed up so hard we got him for 2nd tier prospects. After Kotalik, Jokinen, Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Iginla this feeling seemed impossible. I thought we'd be in rebuild mode for a decade with how bad we screwed up our asset management and now we're a contender.

So, we're now a RW and a legit goalie away from being a legit contender next season.
Seriously, it's that close.
I am hoping that Dubnyk reaches UFA and signs with us. Then it'll only be a 2nd line RW that we need.

The Flames Stanley Cup window opened today.
Now I foresee a line up of
Gio-Hamilton
Brodio-Wideman
Russell-Engellend
Wotherspoon-Smid
Keith won the Conn Smyth this year with people asking, "how can u play the whole playoffs at 30min+ per game?"
The Flames played 2 rounds with 3 Defensemen playing 30+.
The scoring is there, and better with Hamilton.
The defense is far better with Hamilton.
When we have a goalie that can steal a game, and both our current NHL goalies have shown they can, we suddenly have an open window for a cup.

But we used the pick we aquired for Glencross. If we didn't trade Glencross we wouldn't have had the pick to trade in this deal.

Technically there is still the Vancouver pick, only one selection lower than Washington's.
So, had Glencross not been traded, the Hamilton deal still would have gone through in the end. But the kicker here is that the Flames retain a 2nd and have an extra 3rd in this draft because of that Glencross deal, which makes giving up those picks for Hamilton a LOT more palatable.

What does everyone feel about signing St Louis for 2 years to fill the hole in RW for the next year or two?
He is still quite good and put up 52 points as a 40 year old this season. Might be a fantastic mentor for the kids.

It's not the worst idea, but I don't know if he'd want to return. He is helping Gaudreau adjust to the NHL, so who knows.

It is quite amusing to read Bruins fan reaction as the trade unfolded. Eerily similar to how Flames fans reacted to the Phaneuf trade.
