Those videos are incredible, especially the double bosu balance lunge with the weights. There's so much focus on core and range of motion. Never seen an NHLer's off-season training regimen so up close.

$32 for 4 years, then sign him to a retirement contract.

The problem with that is that 4 year extension would take him to the to/past that 35 year old threshold. Any contract signed after is on the cap until it is over, regardless if Gio is still playing. I think his and his agent's mind set is that this is his last contract.

Surely anything signed after that would be one year at a time?

I would be shocked if the term was anything other than 5 or 6 years. My guess is they have probably already figured out how long the deal will be, they're likely haggling over dollars at this point.

If Gio is still a top 4 defenseman at that age why would he settle for a 1 year deal? Surely other teams would offer more security than that.

I have heard that this deal is more or less done now, though I can offer no more than hearsay from someone who should know.
Also speculation there will be no announcement until all parties are in Calgary and available for the presser.
Just an FYI for those interested.

They are going to do a presser for an extension? I guess it's August and they are as bored as we are.

You definitely do a presser for a big contract like this for your all-star captain.

He's the captain, and the dollar amount could be the highest in Flames' history.
Also, the topic has generated a 1,000 posts on CP.
You don't think that warrants a presser?

I just don't remember any pressers from before for extensions. I thought they only did em for new signings.

They traded Campbell to Florida for Olesz who they bought out. They ended up saving 4 million in cash and they had other players step up (Hjalmarsson) to fill that role.
In 3-4 years, someone like Morrison/Spoon/Andersson/Kylington will hopefully be ready to take the #3 spot. Or someone else entirely. We won't know until we get there.
The problem with our team is that in a few years, some really good players may have to be moved in order to keep the core intact, just like the Hawks did. Certain players will have to be moved in order to keep the better ones. Players like Russell and Wideman will likely be the first to go in order keep someone like Hudler or will go towards the younger players.

If that is the case probably won't be announced until the end of August/beginning of September when players start trickling in for the start of camp.
Glad to hear it is more or less done. Having that hang over the team during the season would have been an unnecessary dark cloud hanging over the team.

This is going back a ways but Iginla had one in 2002.
My mistake - see post 1039
Thanks MMF!

It might be the biggest contract in Flames history, so yeah, there will be a press conference. Giordano is their captain, their star player. Surprised anyone even questions it.

Like I said, I don't remember them ever doing a presser before for an extension only.
Toonage just said there was one in 2002, but I have no memory of that.
EDIT: Definitely not complaining. Just a touch surprised, but pleased.

Yeah, even Iginla's back in 2002 wasn't an extension, he was an RFA at the time. But for this, I'm sure there will be one.
