I think that is a fair analysis. To me the AMF is clearly a subsidy, but I think it survives the gift clause if COG can show the loss to Glendale is greater if the Coyotes leave. However, I think they may be under-estimating how many events could be held in Jobbing if the Coyotes left.
GWI seems to be now leaning on the following point:
Goldwater Institute @GoldwaterInst #Glendale
mayor & councilmembers haven't yet been given the economic analysis, let alone the public. #Coyotes
|
What I find really amusing and wonder if it is a shot or not are the references to the Diamondbacks as a comparable seeing as the GWI board member Randy Kendrick is married to Diamondbacks CEO Ken Kendrick and the DBacks got all sorts of government subsidies

Pro sports is an ultimate luxury, and it should not hurt the city it represents or it's citizens.

When did you move to Glendale?

I would imagine it's a case of the Court being unable to prevent the vote from taking place, but still having the power to declare that the procedures surrounding the vote did not comply with the law and are therefore invalid. Preventing the vote has the court inserting itself into the political process, a judgement on the validity of the vote is a strictly legal issue.

I was drawing a parallel. If the same situation was going on here, I would not support it, no matter what. It is a joke this is even being considered.

Yeah its pretty ridiculous. No wonder he wants the team to stay there, they are fawning over the guy like he is some kind of rock star.
Contrast that to the reception he receives in Canada.

Wow, Greg Jamison speaking now...he is laying it on real thick.
I think everyone at this meeting is going to need a bath after he is done.

Living well outside of North America alltogether I hope the Coyotes move. I don't like sideshows like this.
If there was a way to save the Coyotes, it would have happened already. With each passing year the likelihood of it happening decreases. Time to pull the plug.

After having to watch numerous garbage meetings like this to see if they were sold to Winnipeg I cannot bother watching it anymore. Just glad the fate of our chances getting a franchise is no longer controlled by that looney bin mayor Scruggs and her crew.

I'm still not sure why the NHL and other entities are trying so valiantly to have them remain in Phoenix. Feels like no other relocated team recieved this type of leniency.
Just move the team to Quebec City already, and start making money. Why doesn't the NHL full-out promote going to a city that will embrace hockey?

I'm just trying to figure out why you care so much about something that has pretty much zero impact on you.

If the Coyotes move, the Flames have less teams in their conference/division. Easier to make the playoffs.

What point is that? That people in Glendale should be pissed? I'd agree with that, hence why I asked when he moved to Glendale. Not sure why people in Calgary would be pissed about something that doesn't impact them.

At the end of the day you are right, it has no impact on me, and neither does it on 99% of the people in this thread, so I suppose we should just close the thread off to everyone but bouw and arrow.
What a stupid comment.

Yes, I can imagine.
I am pulling the plug on this...its a foregone conclusion on how the 4 "in favor" councilors are going to vote.
The fact that a city controlled by a small council are so blinded by this that they are spending themselves into bankruptcy is quite frightening. I feel bad for residents of Glendale.

You live and work in NYC, but spend your spare time in a Calgary Flames message board. What happens in other cities can impact others, as much as the Flames still impact you thousands of miles away.

It is looking at it from a humanity point of view. Why should taxpayers be overburdened to keep a team that they don't want? I feel for the people of Glendale, they are being made to financially support a team they don't care for. It also does effect every fanbase because it is better for the NHL and for all other franchises to have that team in a healthy market.
